Its supposed to, the ECM adds to the timing, for a few reasons, Like idle control strategy for one.

When there is different load readings, the ECM adjust timing also. It doesn't stay a Base timing the whole time.

hello all, i understand exactly all the instructions here, but we need to align the correponding timing mark at the pulley (for example if i want 14 degrees, I paint that mark on the pulley for reference) with some stationary timing point on the front of the timing chain cover, but i could not find the fomous stationary point.
I found instead some bracket attached to the chain cover similar of the one mentioned by "Smoked88GT". so, what point of the bracket I should used to align the marks on the pulley? points 1, 2 or 3 in the attached picture.

The spout is the small grey plug, its before the large plug that goes to the dizzy. Its just on one of the wires.

The plug that goes to the dizzy, is the TFI connector. Moving that plugs location left to right, also move the base of the dizzy, which in turn, advances or retards timing.

There is a 1/2 in bolt right next to the shaft of the the distributor and thats what secures it

ok guys i am having problems with my marking as well when i use my timing light i have just one notch in my pulley and it has already been marked with white paint no numbers that i can see now my timing is advanced past this mark with the white painted mark below the pointer which i am thinking is the wrong way because the car runs but lacks power and pops when i let off accel. I need to go the other way from what i am reading in this post right? I am not sure if my line is 0 or 10 degrees

I just did mine as long as the previous paint mark is at 10* then I'm around 14* right now I'm not sure if I got a ping. Here is a question will ya get zapped from the coil wire if ya touch it? If you shouldn't would could be wrong? I accidently touched the top of it while I was getting ready to adjust it and got zapped good could actually see the spark jumping to my hand. lol
