Question 1993 Mustang LX 5.0, Engine noise!

alright ive got this problem, im not totally sure its bearings, but its a constant clattering, after the engine has warmed up after about 10-15mins, i have good oil pressure, 36psi at idle warm, i saw a metallic shimmer in the oil this past weekend which that is a sign that the bearing are about to let go, but i have good oil pressure, high as 60psi when i first start driving, and now i have a ping sound coming from the 5th clyinder, i took the valve cover off this weekend checked all my valvetrain for abnormal wear or possible problems could not find anything, does anybody think its bearings, also i just replaced my timing chain, and lifters they have about 3500 miles on them, so im kinda stumped, like i said the only things that leads me to bearings is the metallic shimmer i saw in the oil this weekend, has anyone had a oil pump make noise like this?

Hey,The first thing I would go for since your noise only comes from #5 is the push rods. It's free to check before you go after the money stuff.Just pull them out and roll them on a peice of glass to check for strait. But honestly I would think it to be a rod bearing or wrist pin.probably wrist pin if your pressure is good.

Weel if you just changed your lifters I would say thats were the shimmering oil came from. And probably the same for the noise. Check the rocker for adjustment.. And check the rod and lifter

Sounds more like a valve if its just a ping

in my engine building days, i would think that new lifters should not produce this in the oil considering they are roller lifters, unless one of them has failed, if thats the case im going to suspect wear on the camshaft and roller tips, its possible the push rods are worn, and could give me incorrect preload and noise, but the oil shimmer has got me worried

If the oil has metallic in it, something is wearing out and the bearings are the most likely part to do that. I haven't heard of an oil pump making noise, they just lock up, twisting or breaking the oil pump shaft. How many miles are on the bearings?

213,000 miles, that right there is an almost definite that the bearings are gone, has anyone changed bearings on there mustang with the crank in the engine, i know the engine will have to come out or be lifted at least 12 inches to clear the pan, but is it possible to change the bearings in that way

I changed them on a mustang II that way, fairly simple . Shouldnt be much different on the late foxes. Make sure you change that oil pump too!

simple as in you just had to lightly tap them out, and slide the new ones in, same for rod bearings, i was planning on doing all of them, im in the military and our car hobby garages have all the stuff we need, so its possible to do this in a weekend

changing out the bearings is not a hard job but if your offat all they will spin and then your spending money on rebuilding the engine i would advise if your going to change the bearings to have they crank turned and while your at it check the wrist pins pistons etc!
