Default Speedometer cable question

my speedometer wigged out on me today. It reads zero, doesnt move at all. So i checked the speedo cable at the gauge cluster and it was attached, checked the speedo gear at the tranny, the teeth were a little worn so I am going to order a new one. A few months ago my speedo cable fell against my headers and melted the covering. I want to replace it but am not sure of the length of the stock cable. At autozone.com i found one with a length of 71 inches for a manual tranny w/ cruise control. They also have a 120 inch cable. So which one do i need?

Not sure of the stock length, but I would think the 71" is plenty long enough.
When it melted against your headers, it probably made the steel braided cable inside it weak and my guess is it finally broke. The cable you found at Autozone, is it the replacement inner cable or a brand new complete speedo cable?
They do sell the inner cable in a generic length that you can cut to fit. If that's the way you are going just remember you need about 1/4" sticking out beyond the outer cable fittings. If possible, route the inner steel bradied cable up thru the housing (with the housing still attached to the speedo head and routed thru the car down to the transmission) until it stops inside the speedo head and then down on the transmission side, leave about 1/4" sticking out beyond the tail housing fitting. This will ensure that you have enough inner cable to "drive" the speedo gear.

That would be the way I'd go, you would do better to have it be too long than too short.

got another question. When I pulled my speedo drive gear out it is wine colored and has 16 teeth. I installed this gear when I swapped in the 3.55 rear end. With this gear my speedo reads correctly. However every site I have checked lists the 16 tooth for 3.27, For my rear end ratio it is either a 17 or 20 tooth. I could have the wrong gear installed and with it being 16 teeth it may be close enough that my speed may have been 5mph or so less than what i was traveling. I was just wondering if anyone who is running a 3.55 rear end could let me know what speedo gear drive they are running.

If you still have the stock tranny the black one is the one you need

I found a calculator online that allowed me to enter gear ratio, tire diameter, and the number of teeth on the drive tooth gear. It calculated that i need a 20 tooth gear which is the black one.

Thanks Drew
