I have a 1988 Mustang GT. The trunk lock was working just fine before it stopped engaging. The lock will still release and the glove box switch still works. It is just that the lock is not wrapping around the bolt. Only one part of the lock works at a time. If one part gets pushed up into the lock position the other part releases. I can't figure out what is wrong with it and I doubt the ability of a mechanic in my city to fix it.

Does anyone have any advice of how to fix this? or could you possibly diagnose the problem?

The trunk light has also stopped working. When the button is depressed the courtesy lights still stay on. Can someone help me out??

The trunk lock needs to be replaced. And the lights are staying on because one of the courtesy light switches has a problem. One of them are malfunctioning or have pushed further into the doorjam and aren't breaking the circuit. Look at them and you could be able to see the one that's further in. I had this problem and the switches jam nut around it rounded off the ribs that keep the tension on it. It's just age, and there's no fix. You can get these switches at Auto Zone or Advance.
