Do y'all usually order the parts you want from the shop and give it to them to put in or do you show them what you want out of the catalog and just have them order it? Does it make any difference in terms of price?
Most of the time you'll pay the same price as it is in the catalog. If the shop that you are going to is a dealer of those parts that you want they can get them for cheaper because there helping out that company. Depending on whether your parts parts to just fix your car or make it faster and louder will have a change in price because most shops only deal with one company that they get there parts from ie: Napa, Autozone etc. My best interest would be get to know the shop that is going to work on your car so you know that they will not try to mess you you and over charge to make a little cash for themselves on the side.
On the other hand, shops need to make a little money from the parts, and they may treat you better in the future if you can convey that you understand that.
Just depends on the parts. Little things that just keep it running I would buy from them (as long as its not Autozone parts). Performance parts you buy yourself from a reliable company, if the shop doesnt like it go somewhere else. A shop is not going to warranty parts anyways just the labor.

I disagree with that blanket statement. Every shop I've ever dealt with warrantied parts you bought from them. They don't warranty stuff you bring it. That's one of the reasons to buy your parts from the guy who puts 'em on. Example: you take your car into to a reputable local shop to have the water pump replaced because it's leaking. They furnish and install a rebuilt water pump. Two days later, the replacment pump is leaking. It's your contention that the shop won't warranty the pump and labor? A reputable shop will replace that pump for you at NO charge. If they won't they'll soon be out of business.

Reason: add comments
The times I've supplied the parts myself, like my transmission, the shop warrantied their work, but not the parts they installed. Makes sense if they don't know where the customer gets them.

Walking into a repair facility with your own parts and asking them to install them is tantamount to walking into a restaurant with food and asking them to cook it for you. Not realistic by any stretch of the imagination. At least not here on the East coast.

i'd don't know about the rest of the country, but around here, most shops give no warranty at all on customer-supplied parts. if you are going to have a shop install parts for you, its better just to buy the parts from them too.
by the way, most shops add between 10% to 30% markup on parts, aka, they charge about the same as you would pay at the autoparts store but more than it would cost to but online, aka, from summit, jegs, etc
First off are what are you wanting done? If its not performance part related then go through the shop for the part that way you get waranty on both part and labor so if something does happen you dont' have to arguee with them about what failed. Besides in todays world those shops need all the help from people like us to stay open. If the shop is trying to charge an arm and leg for part call them out on it or take your stang else where.
