also will the newer gauges work in the car? is the oil psi warn, gas, warn, and fluid warn up inside the cluster on the 90-up gauge? if the harness is the same then i'll just get a newer one

All '88 Mustangs came from Dearborn with an 85 MPH speedometer.

'90-'93 cluster harnesses are not wired the same as '87-'89

Let me amend that.....All non-Special Service Package ("police") '88 Mustangs came from Dearborn with an 85 MPH speedometer.

OEM speedometers
'82-early '89 SSP = 140 MPH
'84-'86 SVO = 140 MPH (numbers only to 85)
early '89-'93 non-SSP 5.0L = 140 MPH
early '89-'93 SSP = 160 MPH

Ford Motorsport (aftermarket) speedometers
'79-'93 = 140 MPH

everything else = 85 MPH

SSP = 2 MPH increments after 20 MPH and "Certified Calibration" on face
Ford Motorsport = Ford oval and "Motorsport" on face (not on '83-'86)

Then there are also 170 MPH and 200 MPH speedometers refaced and recalibrated by BBK and Saleen.

I don't understand what you're wanting/trying to do.

Are you trying to put a '90-'93 cluster in your '88? OR just a speedometer? Or what?

Please explain. Thanks.

well id like to put the 90-93 cluster in the car. i know the warning lights on the 87-89 are not integrated into the actual gauge package but it on the 90-93. if the wiring harness is the same on all the cars, then the newer cluster will work right? isnt it just the clusters that are different as in motherboards on the back and that cooper wirinf that goes around the cluster? if not, i and wanting to buy a good cluster off of ebay that has the 85mph and swap out the speedometer to the 140mph.this car also has gears in it and i want an actual speedometer back.

You can use the 140 speedo, it's the air bag that got in the way of the speedo panel. The 140 will have a notch to accommodate the air bag unit, since the 1988 doesn't have one, that'll be no problem for you to use it.
The oil, coolant, gas, warning lights were GT model only, LX models didn't have them so the harness is NOT the same. If you want those lights, you'll need the proper harness to have the light connectors. If yours is a GT model, you should have it then.

There are three different OEM '87-'93 140 MPH speedometers:

'87-early '89 SSP
late '89 5.0L non-SSP
'90-'93 5.0L non-SSP

Yes, you can get a 90-'93 speedometer to fit in an '87-'89 cluster. But the mounting points are not the same. See the pictures posted above. Notice the placement of the holes at the top and bottom of each speedometer face. OR you could just get the proper late '89 non-SSP speedometer or cluster, or an '87-'89 SSP speedometer or cluster.

As I posted previously, the '90-'93 cluster harnesses are not wired the same as '87-'89. There are about a half-dozen wires that are in different locations bwteeen the two harnesses. If you want to put a '90-'93 cluster in an '87-'89, you have to moves wires from one harness to the other, and vice versa. You'll need wiring diagrams for both clusters to know which wires to switch between the two.
