Default Convertible top rear window replacement??

Has anyone had to replace their rear window in a Mustang convertible? Mine shattered today when my wife was putting the top down; seat belt got jammed against the back of the seat and pushed against the top as it came down. I have called a few places and got estimates for between $650 and $800. Sounds kinda steep considering JcWhitney sells a glass convertible top assembly for $134. I would just like to hear from someone who has done it though before I commit to doing it myself!! Thanks.

I have done two tops now .One on my buddys 88 LX & one on my 91 LX Its takes a few hours . Just take your time when removing the old one then it will be easy . Got to have staple gun too. We found that a electic gun works the best. Good Luck .

I wasn't planning on doing the top, just the back window. Any advice on that? It has the zipper across the top to release it, but I can't tell how the bottom part is connected, it goes under the trim lip. It looks like maybe I have to remove the trunk lid and stuff like that to get in there. Is that the way to do it? Also since you have done a couple, can you answer this question. Is the top and window assembly all one unit?

Actualy a little tougher than that. You don't have to remove trunk lid.
you remove the cover behide the back seat. there you will see a tac strip that has nuts holding it. The back window is stapled to the tacstrip.
You have to loosen the top to get the back window out. They are seperate pieces.

91Stang, I'm about to replace my top on my 91. Any additional info would be appreciated:
Did you NEED to have a helper?
How long does it take to do an entire top and glass?

Would you be willing to post a "tech article"?

Thanks

Its been about 2 years since We done mine. It dose take more than one person . kind of a pain in the rump. The first one took about 8 hours with four people ,but we had a few beers here & there. The second one took bout 8 hours with just me and my buddy & beer. Also depends on the condition of other parts like the pads & cables. I wouldn't recommend JC whitney tops for an 91. I perchaced the lifetime waranty top from JC whitney and the part that staples to the back bow is just glued so it came off. My top became realy loose. JC whitney won't waranty unless profesionly intalled. So I had to use that the older stangs use on the back bow that staples on the outside with the two metal ends. Looks OK though. My buddy & I would have to think this tech -article out we did have a few mistakes. Not too bad .. sorry for the long post.

Cool

to redo the rear glass loosen the top(just unlatch it ) then go to the back seat undo the two snaps. before unzipping the section. unbolt the 6-8 nuts that hold the base of it to the body. then unzip and remove. lay it flat somewhere and take your new glass section and lay it on top. you can measure it now to see how much you need to trim off the bottom, plus where you need to make the holes for the bolts. after you have done that, unstaple the old one from the trim and staple the new one to it. they say to use about 30 staples to attach it. make sure they go all the way in and are flush with the new material.instalation is reverse of the beginning. should take about alittle over an hour. do not rush as you cannot replace what you cut off.

Cracker289,
I had a similiar problem several years ago with my 96GT Vert. Put the top down with the baby seat arm in the up position. Heard a straining sound from the convertible top motor when I was putting it down. By the time I figured out what was going on - 2 seconds, it was too late and the rear window just shattered!
I ordered a new back panel and took it to a local shop specializing in convertible top replacements. They installed it for about 250-350, don't remember the exact price, but much cheaper than what you listed.
Good luck!

Thanks. I went to an upholstery shop yesterday, they told me they would install my glass for $200. Considering I got it for $145 from JcWhitney catalog, altogether that is less than half of what the glass company wanted to have it installed!!

I had the same thing happen to mine... '86 GT vert... I replaced it myself, and it looks good, but I found out that the upper part where the zipper is attached to the top frame, is not always in the same location, and I didn't feel like taking the whole top off, or removing the staples from this upper section to re-align the zipper with the new window, so it came out a little "off" to one side. Not too noticable, but will do for now, until I can afford to rplace the whole top ( I only replaced the window with a plastic version for now ! )
