Default 302 cam being used in a 351w

I was reading an article in 5.0 Mustang about the 351w swap. They mentioned in there about if you want to use a roller cam that you can use one in the 351w but you need to use a small circle cam (otherwise known as a retrofit cam). What all does this mean?? I have an E-303 cam from my 5.0 that I wanted to slip in there. Would the E-303 cam be considered a retro cam?

you need to see if your 351 block is a roller block. if its out of a truck i think a 93 or later is a roller block, then you can use your e303. if not you need to get a special roller cam conversion kit from compcams or someone else and use a special cam

A small base circle cam is machined to a smaller diameter than a regular cam and allows the taller roller lifters to work in a non-roller block. These cams are generally more expensive than "normal" cams. Try and find a roller block out of a '95-up F-150/250 or Ford Van for the easiest way to make the swap.

Hey thanks for the info. The 351 that I was planning on getting was out of a '86 Ford Crown Vic. It was an ex police car and had the oil pan that I needed. That is why I thought about using this engine. But I do want to use the roller cam so I guess that isnt a good block to use. Thanks again
