Default 1995 new 302 wont run on start up!

Hey Guys,

I recently installed a new 302 short block from Jegs with some new mods and am haveing trouble with it idleing and running rich.I will lis a list of the changes I made and see if maybe someone can help.

302 sort block
gt40 tubular upper and lower intake
bbk 65mm throttlebody
gt40 aluminum turbo swirl heads
1.6 roller rockers
f303 camshaft
bbk fenderwell cold air kit

When you start it it cranks then dies. You have to hold your foot on the gas to keep it running. After it heats up it will stay running but stalls and dies.I can drive down the street but when I stop it dies.It runs so rich at idle you cant keep yours eyes open.I have not replaced any electronis as far as the fuel sytem, maf, tps.or the iac motor.Car runs great going down the road only when you come to a stop does it surge and die.Can someone please help?Thank you!

You definetly need to adjust you fuel/air ratio before you break the motor. If that doesnt fix it then check your timing and MAF.

Yah, the timing could be WAY off. Sounds like it's too advanced possibly. Also, I don't know but all those mods may be too much for the stock computer to handle. Once you get the rich condition pretty much fixed I'd take it and have it programmed.

Thanks man!I just ordered 24lb injectors and a 76mm maf tuned for cold air kit.I will try this and see if it will help.I was starting to think maybe the cam was too big but I have read where others are using the F303 with no problem. With the upgrades I did I should have gone ahead and changed the injectors and maf aswell.

Thinking of ordering a SCT chip.I read where they can custom program one to meet your mods.Anyone familiar with them?

I'm no expert in the computer area but I believe your stock chip can accept a certain amount of mods if reprogrammed however an aftermarket chip certainly can't hurt. If you don't have an adjustable fuel pressure regulator you might want to think about getting one.

Yes a SCT tuner and custom program you a chip based on your mods. I would recommend Bob Kurgan (bob@kurganmotorsports.com).

The problem with the 94-95 computers is that they are very finicky and don't really respond well to some mods.

One other thing is did you re-set the idle with the new throttle body??

Try checking the TPS on the trottle body if its not working or out of its operating prameter your engine will have fits at idle. Also it might be a good move on your part to buy a PMS hand held plug and play tuner. They are pricey ($1000.00) but its been said they can solve most issue with the 94-95 computer.

Ihave tried to set it with no sucess.I did notice this morning that I had a little spec of dirt on one of the two wires in the MAF.I went ahead and ordered new 24lb injectors and a 76mm MAF tuned for them. They should be here Friday.I bought this car in 1996 and it had a CEL on.I took it to the dealer and they replaced the maf.Didnt stall but it had know power at all. Thanks for the responses and I hope to be able to post some good news. Thanks dufkis for that contact.I will check with him after the new injectors.
