Default stock airbox - some thoughts

1. I think this discussion is really for the 79-93 crowd - the 94 and up has a different setup.

2. I believe a gause/cotton type filter (K & N) or other might give gains of 2-3 HP at the very top RPMs - not the assembly, just the filter element.

3. We must be careful about re-engineering what the paid FoMoCo engineers have come up with after hours of research and development and years of experience. I'm not saying that everything the factory does is the best, but there are reasons the Ford designers have things the way they are. It is kind of arrogant to just assume the engineers are a bunch of idiots and we all know better. Now my car has had some... ahem.... modifications... to the emissions equipment, but that is a completely different animal.

4. My setup is the factory one: my factory box pulling ambient temp air from OUTSIDE the engine compartment via the fenderwell. No silencer thing - and I do have a K & N panel filter, and a larger diameter tube though.

What about the people at the dragstrip that pull the passenger side headlight out. Is this to gain more cold air into the engine compartment and open filter area and has this worked for anybody on this site for drag racing . I agree with quarter pounder, for street use an air silencer removed+a clean panel filter is all you need.

No I actually think they pull the Headlight for more of a Ram Air effect.

I have a DIY RAI/CAI but it is more for allowing me to use the SVO strut tower bar with the car than for any perceived power gains. Stock air box and inet tube with a scoop where the fog light was(moved them inboard) with 4" aluminum piping and silicone couler to direct oncoming air into the stock airbox. NO RAM AIR EFFECT UNLESS YOUM ARE RAMMING THE AIR WITH A SC OR TURBO!

I have a bbk cold air..though the cone filter is in the engine bay. Engine definately gets a tad sluggish with the fan splash and hot engine bay. BBK wants me to buy an entire new set up rather than selling me the fender extension...bastards!

Pull the stock air box off and look in the fender. If you see a plastic assembly that would be the air silencer. If all you see is the inside of your fender then its gone allready.
