Ok , here's the deal. I have been wanting to do a 5.0 swap into my 1991 4 cyl. I got a call from my uncle today that he found a 1988 cougar with all the stuff I needed for $800 . So I went and looked at it and it looked great. Car had some front end damage but engine
trans and rear were all great. Mileage wasnt bad and it runs smooth as silk. So i looked it over , thought about it , asked some questions then i bought it. Ok so i get home and start planning everything out , then it hits me. In all my excitment and lack of car knowledge it didn't occur to me that it was pre mass-air. So, that parts sucks. So i did some research on the net and it turns out that this engine has major breathing issues with the heads , emission control junk and it can't handle a hotter cam because of the pistons not being dished like the mustangs. So what i have here is 150hp or so . "Sigh"
Heres the question. I'de probably save money if i skipped the mass air coversion , and all the hassle and just go with a carb wouldn't i ? I want to put an E-303 cam in it and since i had some extra money after finding a decent deal on the other parts I think i might get it bored .30 and do a 331 stroker. I am looking to simplify the swap so would I be better off going with a carb? I mean i get can the mass-air stuff fairly easily but I think I'de do better off carb. The only thing is my dad says he isn't sure if the
trans will work if I do it. it's an AOD . is this true? I want to get a C4 in the future but not for a while. So anyway if anyone has any advice for me about my situation please help me out. I am not very knowledgeable about cars right now but I am learning alot. i've been planning this swap for a long time now after giving up on my 4 cyl so i want to make this happen. I love my car. but it's just , well , slow I'm afraid.
