I'm going to be getting some aftermarket gauges soon and was wondering which ones to get. I know I'll be getting a nice tach. There's nothing like a sweet 5" tach with a shift light sitting on the dash. But what are the other important ones? Air/fuel ratio, volts, oil pressure, temp??? Also, where does everyone mount theres?

Oil pressure and water temp are the typical starting point. You also have to decide between mechanical and electrical. Electrical are easier to install, but are less accurate. To be completely honest, I don't think my A/F has any real use, it just looks kind of cool. It's not real useful for tuning.....
I like my autometer gauges in my a/c vents. Factory look accurate mechanical gauges. I had to drill through the a/c duct behind the stereo to get the lines out and through the firewall. That was a PITA
Mechanical guages are the way to go, very accurate but make sure you rout them properly and dont crack/crimp or have it tight with no slack, then you will be fine, do you really need to have a 5" tack lol i'm not busting em but everyone has them in the stangs, they are annoying to me lol i like to keep my guages in the stock location, Autometer guages in the stock locations look sweet.

Pulled up to the light the other day and a 3 year old on his big wheel looked over at me and then at the light. I knew that it was on. The big wheel was hooked up, rims, sickers, ground FX, the works. Just before the light turned green the little ******* pointed to the NOS sicker on his machine and left a plasic patch that lasted about 100ft. I didn't stand a chance, I was smoked. He rasied his fist in victory and when home for milk and cookies, I just went to the track.
not to down play, but anytime I see a car with all those gauges, and and basically nothing under the hood, I think Rice.

depends on the gauges....5" tach with shift light...definitely only on a car that can walk the walk, but I think my triple pillar pod looks nice without being too ricy...check it out:
People make fun of my pillar pod water temperature guage and say it looks ricey but I love that thing! I have a perfect and accurate reading at all times (mechanical). I plan on getting a voltmeter and oil pressure one set up on there as well. Stock guages are HORRIBLE.

Well as for there being nothing under the hood... that's coming. I already got a GT-40 upper/lower intake, Cold air intake and 70mm TB. Just waiting for the rest of the package to do it all at once. I'm saving up now for my heads and cam it's slow going right now though due to the fact of getting married in two weeks. I would like some AFR 165's but may go with the Thumpers. Any comments there? Not sure about a cam yet though. Any recommendations? Is there anything else I should do with the above mods that I'm forgetting?
Now as for the gauges, is there anyway of mounting an aftermarket tach in the same spot as the factory? I do kind of like the idea of the aftermarket gauges in factory places the more I think about it. In which case I'll be putting a water temp and oil pressure in the a/c vents and maybe, just maybe an A/F ratio and volts on the pillar. Defintely don't want it to get ricer looking

if you plan on going with the thumper heads stick to a 65mm TB. As far as cams go, thumper should be able to ponit you in the right direction. But if you plan on upgrading later on, you won't get anyhting close to what you paid for the thumper heads. Why not just save some more money, and get the all TFS set up. As for the guages, I think there is a kit that replaces your stock guages from autometer, but it is really pricey.

Is it really true the mechanical are way better then electrical gagues ??
I just orderd some phantom electrical Oil and Fuel Pressure gagues and plan on putting them in place of my vents... Plus I heard you cant install some mechanical Fuel Pressure gauges inside the car ??
I would really rather not return the electrical ones for the mechanical ones.. but if they make that much of a difference then it is worth it... at least to me

mechanical may be more accurate but its a PIA to install and personally i dont like the idea of having a mech fuel presure guage in the car. i have yet to put any in my 86 yet. im think ing of getting a cervini cowel hood and adding the fuel pressure there in the cowl. not sure yet.
