Default Replacing Auto Trans shift linkage

I have a 1988 GT 5.0 and today the car would not shift from first to second gear. The car reaches the peak rpm's before the shift to second gear then just spins the engine. I looked under the hood and I can see the linkage for the transmission is broken. It's a small cable connected to the transmission. Actually the plastic covering the cable has snap in two so that the cable droops down insted of being tightened by the throttle cable and spring. I'm looking for some help from anyone that can tell me how to fix this. I can't drive my car! Is this a major transmission repair. I know that I can ruin my transmission if I try to drive the car like this because the car will only go to first gear and reverse, but any other gear I can no longer use.

well I had te same exact problem with my car. First I tried to JB weld the 2 parts together. That held for about 2 weeks then it came apart again then we connected a bunch of zip ties together around it and that has held together for about the last 5 months now so I think it is going to be alright. I even had my engine rebuilt and the guys at the shop said that it is to much has to change the cable out. Then they said it looks like you have it together pretty good as long as working I wouldn't even mess with it.

Thanks Flamed87 I got an estimate to fix it for $160.00 bucks. I have since my post improvised with a piece of coat hanger wire and it will hold the TV cable enough to let me shift to 2nd and 3rd gear. I will get to the shop soon as I can. Thanks for your reply, I'm glad it's not to severe that I can't drive my car. For the record the exact name of the part is BLOCK TYPE-TV CABLE. $65.00.
