Default burnt clutch.... story inside... some questions

I was out doing burnouts last weekend on my road... well i burnt the clutch clean to the plate haha.... well the clutch wouldnt even engage anymore so .....

i bought a ford motorsports 10.5 heavy duty clutch from summit... came with clutch pressureplate and throwout like most kits.....also ordered a clutch cable adjuster kit

first let me say What a ***** to get the tranny out... omg it took me and my dad bout 5 hours just to get the tranny out.... damn H pipe.... ... BTW. what is that hose/pipe that runs down the passenger side next to the tranny that hooks into the back 2 cats on the h pipe anyways??? that was a pain to remove ... so that we could back the h pipe out of the way...

anyways got the old clutch out and the part of the clutch towards the pressure plate was completely gone... but there was still a decent amount on the flywheel side..... My immediate question was... shall we change the flywheel while we have this all apart.... (my first tranny removal besides my 92 probe... which was much different) my dad who has some experience thought it was fine and sanded it down with some very fine sand paper.... Was this an ok thing to do???

we then whiped down the new clutch and plate with brake clean like recommended by ford.... we also cleaned the inside of the belhouseing(where we also pulled out many pieces of frayed clutch from the ventalation holes.. hehe) also we whiped down the flywheel with the brake clean......

we got the new clutch in and bolted the tranny in... then it started to rain so we had to call it a day......

If we did anything wrong or you have anysuggestions please let me know as we have not put it all back together yet.... just bolted the tranny to the engine....

thanks for reading and comments are appreciated..

The flywheel shouldnt give you any problems, but will be a good idea to change the Pilot bearing.

Sanding the flywheel is ok to do, but i would of got either a new flywheel or got that one resurfaced, especially with your burnout clutch frying happiness lol And the pilot bearing should have been replaced as well but remember that next time.

He rasied his fist in victory and when home for milk and cookies, I just went to the track.

Next time,if you're doing this much abuse to your clutch, have the flywheel resurfaced and checked by a machine shop. You probably had about a thousand tiny cracks in the facing surface,as well as a pretty blue tinge to the whole thing. The cracks could lead to the flywheel blowing up under this kind of abuse. That would suck.

Change the pilot bearing and the rear seal.Even if they "look"fine. The two parts together might cost you $25.00,but if either goes bad after the install, you gotta pull it all out again.

And yes,get your flywheel turned.Any competent shop will inspect it,and measure it to see if it can be turned.Just like brakes,if they get too thin then it's time for a new one. This one can be a safety issue,as a cracked flywheel can shatter and if it does, that aluminum bellhousing won't do jack to protect you.

While you're in there, also check the fork pivot(the little ball that the fork hooks into)and the fork itself fold bending, cracks, etc. Both pieces are readily available and cheap. This would also be an ideal time to replace the rear trans seal where the driveshaft goes in.REAL easy to do when the trans is on the floor with no shaft in it.Another ten bucks or so.

Have fun!

thats you smog tube. It blows clean air into your exhaust. Supposed to help with emissions or something.
