1990 Mustang H.O. rebuild question (hoses and lines)
hey guys have a few questions i was wondering if anyone would be able to help me with, i recently did a engine tare down on my 90 5.0 H.O. to clean everything up and do some porting work while i changed the head gasket, i tried to mark everything that i unplugged and disconnected but some of the tape came off and was covered up by paint so there are a few lines that i am not sure where EXACTLY they go, mainly on the upper intake. I had to cut the head gasket that came with my rebuild kit because i think it was for a stock 5.0 not the h.o. and i did a very poor job of doing that , anyhow i had it running for a few mins ran fine but white smoke was coming from the exhaust i am assuming it was coolant being burnt so i figured the head gasket needs to be replaced again,i've already ordered the proper head gasket this time but before i change them again i wanted to check if that was the problem seeing i am getting no start right now, grounds electrical are fine getting spark and i think gas but i am not sure because i think one of the gas pressure lines run to the upper intake, i had to take off the tbp sensor and put it back in for it to start the first time so i am not sure if it's just flooded or the throttle body sensor was not put back properly,p.s. i forgot to mention i did not touch the timming on the crank or cam and i am using the 351 firing order it started up and ran for a few mins twice and cranks but doesnt not start now,
so i was wondering if anyone has any detailed blueprints of what lines go where or a complete engine breakdown of the h.o. 5.0 that would help a great deal, just want to know what vacuum lines go where e.x. also any advice on the tbp sensor would be great thanks in advance fellas
That white coming out was the coolant being turned to steam. That's the head gasket alright, and hopefully this time you got the right one. Fel Pro number 1011-2.
Since it was most likely the head gasket, don't keep trying to start the engine. It'd be best to leave it off and wait till you change that gasket.

hey guys THANKS FOR THE INFO great link dirty dave just what i was looking for !!! it would be easeir if they had the actual pictures of the parts but i just took a quick glance at the site will look into it further tmr, thanks for that part number eagle summit couldn't find it i will get them to send me a set asap, the only thing i noticed was that it's very similar to the gasket they sent me other than a lot of those holes not being punched out on the set i have on there now that's why i made the holes but did a poor job of it, also i noticed that on each of the SIDES only one side is punched out (the left side on the diagram) i was wondering if there's a reason for that now seeing i cut out both sides on the ones i put on, i am starting to think that wasn't the best idea now , is there a reason for the other side being blocked off ? thanks in advance !!!
did head gaskets myself this winter and wondered the same thing. The front of both gaskets are covering the coolant holes by cylinders 1 and 5. Spoke to the guy milling my heads, and in a nutshell, he said those ports are covered on purpose and not to cut them open or it will create some major problems...I asked him why the coolant tubes are even there if the engine doesnt use them, and he said it would take more time than he had to explain it to me..so I still dont have an official reason on it, but engine runs fine after the change out.

hey guys, well i got the new headgaskets and put them on AGAIN, but once more i am not sure if they are on right, i put them both on the right direction because these ones had a marking that said " FRONT" so i put those two sides facing the front of the car, but i am still not getting any start.. not sure if it could be a fuel issue or what, i pressed the release valve on the fuel line that goes to the injectors and there is gas coming, does the rad need to be fulled with coolant all the way and the cap on ? i fulled it to the top but did not put the cap on, not sure if that why it's not starting, any suggestions you guys have would be much appreciated,
Try turning the dizzy a little one way or the other and see if it fires, make sure the Spout is out. Also make sure you have power at the injectors red wire.

thanks for the input 89 coupe, i did not touch the dizzy at all so i am not sure if that will help but i will try it in the morning as well as the injectors, just to make sure does anyone have a diagram or something that shows how the head gaskets are supposed to look like on both sides ? thanks
If you put the gaskets on with the "front" in the front you should be ok. There are tabs on the head gaskets that should face up..these are actually rests for the lower intake gaskets.

yeah i am just doing some research and from the looks of it i did put the head gaskets on right, so i dont think that's the problem, i am thinking electrical, maybe tbp sensor ? it makes every effort to crank but not turn over, i will double check that i am getting spark and fuel tmr, also is there a way i can crank it from the starter solenoid on the drivers side fender wall ? thanks
p.s. i didn't have a lower intake gasket that goes between the heads and lower intake so i just put some gasket maker to see if it would turn over, i will get a new set tmr, maybe coolant is leaking in from there? i will have to double check the vacume lines tmr as well but i would not think that would keep it from not starting
quick question , should i have turned my crank and then tighten down my rocker arms when the pushrod reaches it's top point ? i just put each pushrod and rocker arm where they were before and tightened them down, maybe that's causing a problem with the valves opening and closing ? sorry if it's a stupid question guys it's my first time inside a ford 5.0 . also if i did manage to get coolant back into the cylinders from the lower intake is there a way i could get the fluid out of the cylinder without having to take off the heads ? thanks in advance for the time and advice fella's
