Question 1983 - 1988 Mustang Master Cylinder upgrade

Hi Guys,

I'm in the middle of a conversion from and 83 to an 88 5.0 and in the process of upgrading the master cylinder. My question is can I replace just the M/C or do I have to replace the Brake Booster as well?

Can you give a little more info on what you're converting and why you need to upgrade the master cylinder? Are you doing some kind of a brake swap?

Well the car originally was an 83 5.0 carbed and the motor was swapped out for and 88 5.0 HO EFI motor. So in the process the dash and all wiring harnesses (including lighting front and rear) and computer were swapped as well, front clip, and GT body kit. The M/C needs to be swapped out anyway and I really didn't want to back an 83 M/C as I already have the M/C from and 88. Not to mention I will be able to have the brake light functioning. So essentially this car has been converted from and 83 to an 88 with the exception of the brakes which I may do at some point although I haven't totally decided on my plans for this car yet. But for now I need to replace the M/C.Thanks,

The only problem I see is that the '83 will have SAE fittings and the '88 will have metric fittings. So you might have to reflare the lines between the M/C and proportioning valve with metric fittings or maybe use the lines from the '88. You might also compare the bore diameter between the two M/C's to make sure they are the same. If they're not the same, you may want to go ahead and swap the '88 front brakes and proportioning valve to keep the systems together.

Something else I just remembered is that the '83 M/C has 2 ports with 2 lines running to the proportioning valve. The '88 M/C has 3 ports with 2 lines running to the proportioning valve and the 3rd line running directly to one of the front brakes. If you're pulling all these parts from a parts car, it would probably be wise to go ahead and swap the entire brake system if you have it there. You're not really gaining anything performance-wise by swapping only the M/C anyway. The '88 (assuming its a 5.0L car) will have the larger 11" front brakes, you're '83 has 10" front brakes.
