1992 Mustang LX AOD Transmission Problem

Hey, thanks for your responses...

A few months ago, my OverDrive went out on my automatic transmission. My drive gear [D] still works great, however I do not get a 4th gear... So I pretty much just drive around in drive, and try not to exceed 3K RPMS in 3rd gear. Does this sound like the OD band went out? Does [D] Drive gear normally get 4th gear? or do they only get 3 gears in your cars as well? Any ideas of what the problem could be here? Thanks

My OD went out to, its a weak gear. If its in (D) its only 1st threw third and you can drive it that way, I have been doing it for a few months but my work is 5 miles from home.... When my (OD) went out I was on the interstate and heard a LOUD bang, and the rpms shot up like it was in nuetral, so I put it in nuetral and back into (OD) and it engaged for a min.. Then BANG... it slipped, so now I always drive around with it in (D). A rebuild will fix it.... I have had one rebuilt on a diff. mustang, an 89 and spent 850 with a shift kit and new stall converter (stock). and plan got qouted on the same price just recently to do the same and rebuild the 91.... Its fine to do though, its a little more wear and tear and a little gas but...... Nothing thats extreme unless you cruise the interstate all the time. Hope this helps

OD servos are notorious in the AOD's for failing....problem may be as easy as replacing the OD servo with an A or A+ super servo...this wsa exactly my problem..I replaced it and shifts like new...and not too difficult to do. If you decide to go that route, PM me and Ill help. There is a very important step you must do before buttoning the tranny up or youll be taking everything apart again. Let me know.

I bought a video that is very detailed on rebuilding the AOD. It looks straight forward. How to Rebuild the Ford AOD Automatic Over Drive Transmission DVD Video

You might be able to see all of it on You Tube for free.

Anyway good luck
