Default 84 GT 5.0 Tire Size

I have a just purchased1984 GT 5.0 that has the original Michelin 220/55 R 390 (TRX Wheels 4 lugs) which I cannot locate for any resaonable price. It appears that I should change the wheels and then move to a more standard tire size. I am trying to determine the maximum tire size that will not rub or require modification to the car. My goals is to get the following size for the car 245/40 -17 or even a 255/40 17. The wheel size would be 17"x8".

I have been told the maximum size that will fit is 225/60 15.

Any advice is welcome.

I have a 92 and I have seen 275/40x17s on stock and lowered Fox Stangs. I run 255/40zr17s in the back and 235/45zr17s up front. The wheels are 17x8 front and 17x9.5 rear... Not sure if the 84 is any different. I did cut my rear fenders in readyness for 275/40/17 cominb soon.

Twisterm did the tires rub at all on your '86? Also, did you lower your call at all?

My 86 has 245-45-17 tires on 17x8 wheels
with a +20mm offset
lower about 1.5"
fits like a dream, no issues, or havent had any
problems for 5 yrs.

I could use your trx wheels for my 79 if interested
in getting rid of them, lmk
thanks

Cool ride!!!
Tire Rack might $till have $ome TRX tire$, but they're $ure to be expen$ive a$ heck. If you have any connections in Europe, and in the shipping industry, you might be able to save some $$$ on them.
Wheel Vintiques, or someone like that, needs to tool up some 15 and/or 16 inch knockoffs...
