Re: problems getting car to start OK, sounds like it could be a couple things, mainly two tho... If you mean you have to re-adjust how you push the clutch in, or the clutch is the key to finally getting it to start, then it sounds like the Neutral Saftey Switch, or Clutch Saftey Switch. What this does is not allow the igniton to reach the starter if the Clutch is not fully engaged, so as you do not roll the car as you turn the key.
The other thing, and more likely the problem is the Igniton switch. Not the Igniton lock cylinder where you put the key in but the switch behind it, the lock cyl, turns a rod that activates a switch and starts the car, It is one unit when you buy one, on one end you have the switch that rests against the lock cyl, and 5-10 wires that travels down the steering column to the other end which is almost always a half-moon shaped harness where other wires plug in. Older models its fairly easy to change. Most its easy change, one thing you should need to rent is a steering wheel puller, and then you can access the lock cylinder release button. from there its usually a matter of bolt/screws 8mm? For more specific, let us know if you need help, or check a Chilton/Haynes manual.
Hope this helps..
