i had recently noticed that my temp gauge in my 1989 5.0 was going rather high so i decided to change my old water pump. I installed a new one from and applied rtv gasket sealant along with the gasket. I let it dry 2 hrs and tried it and it leaked! I thought i had broken the gasket so i went and bought a new gasket and tried it again with rtv sealant again, but when i was tightening it , (alternating sides like i should) i heard a very tiny pop. I let it dry overnight and tried it the next day and it leaked again! What happened was (the ford dealership said the pump is made to go on without any extra rtv sealant, just the gasket). So 1 bolt cracked one side of the block. So i amy having a whole new engine block put in! $4000 mistake. Has this happened to any one else?
Sorry to hear that but $4000 is way to much for a new block. That's even high for a dealer install. If you can do the work yourself, you can save yourself about $3000.00.
Yes a lot of waterpumps these days are constructed such that RTV is not needed... in fact most seals are that way. I usually only use a very faint trace of it in spots to hold gaskets inplace while I install components.
Though, I hav enever heard of a bolt cracking a block. Braking a bolt off in the block yes... but this is a new one on me. I hope you are not just putting a factory short block in. At that price, you could have you a strong stroker bottom end put in.

find a good shop, that price is way high, if you don`t have another car to drive may be worth the time saving to have it done rather than in pieces in the garage and running into other problems.... they always happen..:-(
