Hey I'm a newbie to all of this(figurative and literally) so i get confused with all of the shop talk i see on here, hopefully one day I can talk like that too bc its pretty impressive but anyway I have been having some idling issues with my mustang gt. I'm thinking it might be a leak in the vacuum lines somewhere. Anyway basically it goes dead if i take to long at a stop or when i go in reverse. i just replaced the spark plugs wires, did an oil change and replaced the alternator and the voltage regulator switch and put in a new duralast gold battery. Does any one know how to adjust the idle? it sits at about 500 rpms but if it goes any lower it goes dead. My timing might be off but that is the last thing i wanna mess with right now. please help!
You need to hook a v meter to your TPS (black bowtie lookin plug on top of the throttle body) I believe you just check the v on the green wire but theres only two so cant be too hard. It needs to read as close to .98v as possible. Loosen the two screws that hold it in place and turn till it reads .98v(+-) Could very well be a vacuum leak. Do not mess w/ the screw on the TB until you have it reading .98. If its not idling at around 950 rpm then you can adjust the screw a little I believe.
Thanks for replying. I swear I think my mustang has a mind of its own sometimes. It didnt really start acting up until i started fixing alot of stuff on it. I noticed when i accelerate the engine pings like its not getting any fuel could that be related all together?
ok thanks so much i really appreciate the help from a fellow cartersvillian lol at that I will be tryin to do this tommorrow i still have to go get a v meter..any good places?
NAPA, AUtozone and the like....your pinging is probably your timing...if u do a search on this site(top right of page) youll find the timing is not that difficult to do. Your idle should be around 750

I would definitely check your timing before you do internal damage. stock spec should be at 10 degree, modified is higher. mine is set at 14 degree its a built 306, with a bcam, 24lbs and so forth. A good shop should be able to guesstimate your timing according to mods, remember pinging is off time detonation. dont run low octane fuel with advanced timing. have you reset computer since working on the car, what are you doing to the car???
