Hey guys, im fairly new to the mustang world as i recently picked one up last month. It is a 2.3l and i am in the process of doing the 5.0L swap. I have a donor car for all the wiring and parts etc. The motor is fuel injected right now but i was wondering if i should switch it to carb? Would this save me a lot of headaches?
Im dan and i own two 92' lx's. One is a lx aod 5.0 convert w/a slight bend (JUNK- but runs and drives). The other is a 92 lx hatch4 cyl. wich i just bought off e-bay for $600.00, and have to pick up in kansas city,Mo on sat. ( i only paid $390.00 for the 5.0 convert. Anyways i want to perform the infamous swap from 4 to 8. Between the two years what do i need to do as far as wiring. I was told that both cars being 92's, that i just need to plug in the engie compartment harness and swap the correct ecu. As for the brake booster, lines, fuel lines, and rear quad shocks, im unsure. Mechanically, i think ive got it. I am swapping the rear end, it has a motorsport 373 gear in it. I am not going to use the car as a saily driver anytime soon. I just want to swap the drivetrain over and get the car situated, figure out the wiring, then ill worry about issues like the fr. susp. Like i said i have a complete 5.0 convert donor car of the same year for parts. Ps would you recc taking all the fr. susp from the convert?...Dan Your help and input is greatly appreciated.
i switched over a 89 4banger to a 5.0L that i had wrecked, it took me 2 months and lots of hours to finish, i was 17 when i did the swap pretty much all by myself unless i needs help lifting things, car still runs to this day that was 4 years ago.
if i was to give advise i'd say find a beat up 5.0L like i had , much easier than trying to locate all the things u need, thats my 2cents
I have a question about the 4 cyln to 5.0 swap. I found a 90 4cyl. and a 89 5.0 donor car. My question is, will I have a problem with emmisions putting an older engine in a newer car?
Yours is the ideal situation! Just take your time, study both Mustangs side-by-side and take notes on what needs to be transferred. I’m not sure if the relays on the P/S side fender apron are the same between 4 & 8, but you have them anyway. I would switch them out. Yours should be a “Plug-n-play”
ben..,
Yours is do-able. I did this swap on my son’s 90. The 89 harness will plug right in, but there are slight differences in the pin-out location on some of the connectors. You will have to reroute some of the wires. Get yourself a factory Vacuum/Wiring trouble shooting guide from Helms http://www.helminc.com/helm/welcome_...5XR68420L03EQ9
Study which wires need to be switched. Some will have to be shortened or lengthened. Your second question, much better to switch out the harness. Remember the headlight harness needs to be switched too. It holds the alternator wiring for the 5.0.
Opps, the emmissions,
There are not enough difference between 89 and 90 on emmissions, you should be fine.

so it's better to just wire the motor in than to swap wiring harness's?
That's not what I'm saying. You would still have to swap the harness, but there are some differences in the 89 and 90 harness. The connectors are in the same areas, but some of the wires are not. Ford moved some wires from one connector to the other. I could only imagine this was to accommodate the air bag sensor wires.
You will need to move some of the wires in the 89 harness from one connector to the other. One of the connectors is behind the P/S kick panel while the other is on the D/S next to the master cyl.
This is why it is best to get like years.

Can anyone estimate how much it would cost for a auto shop to do the 4 cylinder to 5.0 engine swap? (assuming you had a donor car) Any info is greatly appreciated.
I'm attempting this 4 cyl to 5.0 swap, Do i disconnect the e-brake cables at the backing plate or is there a better way. Can the whole front cradle containing the eng. and suspension be unbolted and swapped over like on the old mopars? I heard that the rear control arms on the 4 cyl. were stronger and should be swapped, im a little unsure about this. Any info on this swap will greatly be welcomed.I was told i could even use the gas tank and pump that the cars are that much the same. If any one has done this and has a sort of check list or certain order to go by i would like to view a copy. I am starting w/ the rear end.
I had a 91LX hatchback and swopped everything over to a 90 coupe.I did it about three months ago and installed a aftermarket k-member,manual racket pinion, rearend, fuel lines, brakes and roaders, wire harness, adjustable clutch quadrant, ECM, and dash wireing. The reason I swapped over to a coupe, was b/c it's lighter and smaller. When I had my hatchback I ran 11.65 @119mph w/ 1.68 60ft. at san antonio raceway. My hatchback weighed 28.75lbs. w/ driver. That is w/out bumpers, smog pump, powerstearing, and electric fan. that's w/out A.C. How much faster do u think it wil be with the coupe? By the way it is a fuel injected car w/ a 306 all motor. Does anyone know a shop or someone who can install interior that's w/in a 200 mile radius from victoria,Tx? Please reply back A.S.A.P.
hey yall, Big mustang lover here, but first time in a forum deal like this. hope i'm doing it right. here is my problem, I have 79 stang i bought cheap it had 2.8 v-6 factory. in the last couple of years i have brought this car into a great strip street machine, 13.5 at the local strip. in my haste to get it on the road i short-cutted my engine mounts, now i want to sit the engine in the hole like it should be. My fabricated mounts work ok but the engine sits to high in the compartment. The block is a 72" the car is a 79, i have the correct mounts for the 79 stang 5.0 but i can't find the right block half of the mount to make it work, and i ?? the soild mounts i've seen on online auctions. Any suggestions help thanks..
I could really use some pictures or some advise as to what i should remove from the 4 cyl. car as far as wiring in the engine compartment and cabin (dash) area. I also wanted to know if anyone has done the swap an retained the a/c and heater. Do the cars share the same heater boxes ?
Hey all, Im new here and defently new to fords. I want to build up my first vehicle. I went to school to become a mechanic and learned a lot.. My family goes by GM. I own a 88 Dodge Aries but shes sold. now all I am confronted with are GM's... my daily driver; 98 cavalier and a 93 sunbird 3.1 v6 (brothers, that I am going to fix and sell), 02 grand am v6 (fathers), 2002 cavalier (brothers).
I work at a GM dealership. I am getting close to 3 months working there.
Now I wanna build a v8 car... I dont care what it is ... I am not a die-hard fan of any manufactor. But I never worked on any Fords.
Lets get to the point, I am thinking of doing a swap... but I want to rebuild the motor and tranny to make sure it is done right and the way I want it.
This is what I want to purchase as it seems to be pretty solid:
What's the best way to go at this vehicle? Should I just get an old beat off motor and tranny from the junkyard and rebuild them and swap them in? along with other stuff that I will need... Rather then geting a donar car?
