ok so this is a problem ive had ever since ive owned the car. when i first got the car it only happened once in a while. but now it happens atleast 5 times a day when i drive to work.
so heres my problem, the enging just shuts off. but only for a few seconds then it comes back on and then you can smell gas. none of the lights shut off, and the radio stays on. ive already replaced the ignition switch. any ideas?

o yea and another thing, some times the car will just shut off completely. i go to start it and you cant hear the pump prime. i wait 5 minutes, turn the key the pump primes and the car starts. maybe this is linked to problem? its only happened twice, but both times the car was side was haha

When it quits next time, jump out and pull a plug wire and see if you have spark when you bump the starter solenoid. If it has spark, then Id look at one of the relays mentioned above.
If you have spark when this happens, and the Shut off you speak of is instant, Id say its the ECM relay. Usually a Fuel relay problem it doesnt shut off instantly. It kinda sputters for a second.

what do you mean by bump start? like start the car from the out side of the car with the selenoid and maybe jamb a screw driver in the end of a plug wire to see if i get spark?
i think your on to something. but would that relay make the engine shut off for a few seconds then come back on as well?

Yes, bump start with the solenoid.
Yes, a relay can fail intermittently. The relay is technically a solenoid itself. If the resistance in the electromagnet inside the relay gets high, it will cause the contacts to loose it connection. And the relay breaks the circuit. And you have no power being sent through it.
This also has a possibility of being a TFI or Pick up coil failure. THus the reason of the Spark test when the engine cuts off.
If you could Run the KOEO codes and write down the Memory codes it may point you in a direction to look at.

It's the PIP sensor inside the distributor. Replacing the sensor alone should cure the problem but if you still have the original factory distributor, I'd strongly advise you to replace the whole distributor assembly. I only replaced the PIP sensor when mine started acting up last May and 4 months later, I had to replace the distributor anyway 'cause the shaft bearings were worn. Save yourself that headache by replacing the whole distributor the first time.
it hasnt done it in a few weeks now which is weird...... but summit has a mallory distributor complete with the tfi module for a couple hundred. so if she starts acting up again i might spring for that. thanks again guys

Not really. The weather's getting cooler so the PIP sensor and TFI module are less likely to heat soak and fail. It's only a matter of time before the shenanigans will start again though.
