Default 1986 Mustang GT, Not starting and making wierd noise

ok my car started acting up yesterday. I parked it and when i park it i have to park it in first gear cause my ebrake is broken, so anyways when i parked it and turned it off it was still making a noise from what i thought was the engine bay. so i turned the car on thinking it would go away and nothing. when i took it out of gear and turned it on it went away. when i got home i started playing with my stereo with the car off and then went to start and it makes a weird noise when i try to turn it on and it wont start. so i tried to jump start it and when i hooked the cables up they got hot and the negative side on my battery started to smoke from the jumper cable. after that the electrical in the car didnt work. so i went and bought a starter solonoid thinking that was the problem. i got power in side after that but still does not start. so this morning i tried my jumper box one last time. this time it tried to turn over once then nothing. so i got back out and to my surprise my car would roll a little then stop then roll and stop my car was in first???? how is this possible i was told to check the starter is this a good place to look? also anywere else i should be looking?

Check all of the wireing going to the starter and the solenoid also the negative and positive battery cables for any loose connection or corroded wires.

Check those, and then check the chassis grounds.

Could be a shorted starter or alt take them to be tested.
