Default 1990 Mustang GT, starter stays engaged.

i need some help. ive got a 1990 gt that i bought a few months back. When i bought it, it had a push button start hooked up. I wanted to hook the regular ignition back up and take out the push button. So long story short i took the push button completely out and hooked the wires from the ignition back up to the solanoid. now when i turn the key the car trys to turn over but when i stop turning the key the starter is still trying to start the car so i have to remove the battery cable to get it to stop. I have a 5 speed transmission. I thought i could possibly be the nds switch (because it poped a check engine light when i bought it and that was the code) so i replaced the switch and that didnt do a dang thing. What could be the cause?? while the push button was hooked up it didnt have this problem. could the ignition module have gone bad??

It could be a bad ignition switch.

Sounds like the starter solenoid is going bad.

the switch is not sticking. heck i can take the key out completely and once its out and i try to put the battery cable back on, sometimes it will spin the starter as soon as the terminal and cable touch one another. How would i "test" to see if the starter relay is going bad< or the ignition module?

Try banging on it to see if it stops, sounds ghetto but sometimes it works. If it is bad a new one is only like $20. Someone maybe have a better idea of how to test it??

Default Solenoid

Your symptom of starter continuing to spin is one of two classic solenoid failure modes. Could be that the solenoid failed coincidental with the work you did to reconnect the ignition switch. Just a thought for you to consider. Ford Solenoids are about $40.

unplug the small red wire from the solenoid first, if it stops spinning its your ignition switch; if it doesnt then its the solenoid.
