Default manual valve body q's

My motor is currently being worked on and the new Trick Flow combo is being installed. My AOD doesn't shift into overdrive and I'm gonna have a friend rebuild it. I was thinking about putting a manual valve body in it but I have a few questions. My car is not a daily driver, fuel economy and shift firmness are not issues:
1. Most shifters I have seen are a 3-speed and they have a flip button for 4th gear. Do you downshift from 4th just by switching the lever back?
2. When downshifting while driving, do you give it gas to bring the rpm's up inbetween shifts like you would with a manual transmission?

To anyone who has one, what shifter do you use? I had more questions but my mind is drawing a blank right now. I know most people are going to recommend converting to a manual transmission but I can get this done for cheap and I just don't have the funds as an 18 year old to swap to a tremec. All imput is appreciated.

what is up our car has a lentech aod with a full manual valve body. it also has a stock shifter. you do not have to give it gas just leave it in gear and when you come to a stop upshift into 1st. oh yea the stall is 4,200 i would recommend manual bodies to anyone that is racing there cars. they are bad @ss

Wingless92,
Can you downshift while moving? Say from 3rd to 2nd? Have you owned a manual transmissioned car and how do they compare? Thanks.
