I'm really considering yanking the cats of my car.... Purely for the sound..... but I've been hearing that doing so... you can really screw your computer up??? any truth to that? I have a 95GT with a 93GT Computer installed w/wiring harness, Hooker Shorties Equal, Modest Elgin Cam, Bassani X-pipe, Single Chamber Flows.... any opinions on the dangers/ or not?
My Mustang is running w/o Cats for more than 6 months now and I haven't noticed any issues with the EEC.
At the exhaust system of my car, there are only O2 sensors before the Cats. So the computer won't "sense" the missing Cats.
But due to the lower back-pressure in the exhaust (w/o Cats) you may loose some low end torque.
(I'm not an expert, this is just my experience)
Regards,
Didi

only minor mods: air silencer gone, K&N air filter, 73mm C&L MAF, 1/2" intake spacer, MSD 6A ignition, ignition advance at 12 degree, 3.27:1 gears, the rest is bone stock... (but fun to drive anyway)
My car hasn't had cats for almost 6 years. The only thing bad that I have noticed is the smell. Its worse when you dont have your car tuned properly (like mine).
Oh - And for those tree-huggers out there: Its bad for our environment.
I dont really care though because I only drive a few miles to work and back.
I say you should buy 'em!

95GT ran for... 3 years without cats. No problems.
The only danger is for your wallet. If you get caught street racing and don't have them, they'll drop the book on you. No cats will be in the list of fines you'll be paying.
I did hear about the back pressure issue... but I guess if I'm not really racing anyone too often.... I can afford a slight possible drop in power... I think I'll sacrifice that bit power for a little more roar! I think I'll pull the cats off.... thanks for the advice guys.
Originally posted by RippinTires ha.... a gutted out cat with a straight pipe running through it would be a pretty nice peace of work.... dang I wish I knew how to weld!
um...dont try it...they will put you down as a gross poluter and you will be forced to go to test only locations....keep the cats, it is not too much power, maybe 5hp
No cats for about 6 months now and I love the sound. If you aren't an ass on the road or if you run dumped exhaust with some single chamber flowmasters then the cops will have reason to look underneath your car and give you a huge fine. I know lots of people in CA (very strict exhaust laws) that run offroad midpipes without hassle.
