Default 1989 302 pistons into 1994 351w block?

looking for a cheap alternative, and just was wondering if the 302 pistons will work in the 351w? I was reading on alldata, that they both have the same bore, stroke, and pin diameter but I did read on the net somewhere that the distance from the piston pin to the top of the piston would be different, due to the deck height of the 351w being different.

They won't work. That measurement is called compression distance (or compression height). There is about a .16" or more difference. 302s usually have something around 1.61" while 351s have something about 1.77"

It will work, but you will need 351W with 9.5" Deck, a 3.850 stroker crank and 351 rods, makes a 387. More commonly called a 393 with the 0.030 over pistons.

Or you could get a set of 6.125 rods with the stock 3.5 351 crank.

And the stroke for the 302 and 351s are different, otherwise it'd be the same engine.

You need 351 pistons. The wrist pin is in a different location because of the longer stroke the 351 has. Put 302 pistons in, they'd be coming out of the top of the deck.

Wouldn't it be the other way around? I know from DSS the 302 pistons have a compression height of 1.600" and the 351W pistons have a CH of 1.770"

302 pistons will be below the deck, not above it.
