Default Stock AOD-E can handle HOW MUCH?!?!

Hey guys!

A friend of mine told me the STOCK Automatic tranny on the 1994 'stang can handle just about 400hp.

I just did a complete re-build on my tranny and added a heavy duty torque converter and a new valve body... thats all.

So is it true?

So how much HP can it handle... how much can mine handle now that I got a HD T/C.

Thanks guys!

On the rebuild did you use all the stock parts and what valve body did you use.

yes... everthing stock... even the valve body...

When I did the re-build I couldnt find anything NON stock performance parts... what is there to replace? Its all metal gears with little sandpaper type pads in them... Even the power bands... I wouldnt know how to upgrade this tranny...

yellow run a big tranny cooler too to extend your tranny's life, along with synthetics. also you should install a shift kit, make those shifts firmer. just my two c ents.

You can get larger overdrive bands, as well as performance clutches. I mention the overdrive bands because they are known as a weak link in the AOD/AODE trannies. To get a real heads up as to the limits of the stock tranny and what can be done to strengthen it, call Lentech, Art Car or one of the other transmission shops familiar with AOD rebuilds and built proofing. You will find them and others in our Transmission and Drivetrrain links section. As Spyder pointed out run the best transmission cooler you can get and change the transmission fluid and filter at least once a year. It really helps!

I have heard of slightly modified AOD's handling 400 HP. But, handling it and lasting are two different things. One person my consider 30K out of tranny as good. To me, lasting would be 100K. So my answer would be, I don't think so.

Taking care of the tranny, running quality parts, and synthetic fluid, all makes a difference. As well as, keeping the heat under control. Another big factor, how you drive it.

Like Scott said, I would contact the shops for the final word.

YEA!

Im sorry I forgot to mention the fact that I did install a front mount(in front of the radiator) oil cooler... its pretty big too... almost 28" * 12".

I havent got synthetic fluid in... but I only got about 1000-1200 miles on it... IF THAT MUCH... so is it too late to start syntheticasizing it with synthetic oil?

I really want to get my car up to 400hp... but I really dont have the money right now to upgrade that tranny since I just got it a few months ago... upgrading it will most definantly cost me more than buying and installing heads for the car... but whats the point of upgrading the motor if i cant drive it...

YEA THOSE POWER BANDS ARE REAL CRAPPY! They died on me thats why I did the rebuild!

I got a 1994 mustang GT 5.0 AOD/E
If that makes a difference in handling power...?

Thanks guys,
PETE

Hey Pete you have a fresh rebuild so build the power and enjoy it. If the tranny blows again, it will be a ways down the road so I would'nt sweat it right now.

Build it, beat it, enjoy it and don't worry until its time to bury it

Thats my phylosophy!

But it would be a shame to break it again!

Anyway my stang is getting worked on slowly in my garage and its taken apart... the spindles and ball joints and everything and im gettin poly all around...

and to make matters worst my eclipse crapped on me... i need to get a new clutch to it...or something... wierddddd grinding noise... anyway...so i cant even get to work so i can make my money for my baby to make it berzerky quick.

What makes me cry is that my eclipse feels faster than my beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeutiful stang.
NOTE: I SAID FEEL! I DONT GOT ANY #'s for you guys.

So i get to drive a ricer and a racer... i love it.

IM working on handling first then the engine on my car... cuz my car cant brake, steer or handle for nothing... these cars are wayyy too heavy!

Thanks for your help again!

So I should go for 375rwhp(410-415flywheel) or nawwwww????

Pete you should consider sub frames as one of your first mods. Tightens up the chassis to reduce body flex and therefore improves handling. Most importantly by reducing unwanted body flex, it will help keep the body metal straight and avoid some unwanted kinks in your quarter panels. Buy yourselff a set of good quality sub frames like those offered by Maximum Motorsports and have them welded in. Your stang will love you for it

I was really thinking of those... but at this moment I cant put them in 'cuz I dont have a welder... but I would order those and put them aside for later.

I still cant figure out why my left side of the car is 1 1/2inches higher than my right...

Right now im on my way to coil overs... got them on order with new a-arms and got the rears on order also.... hope to get them and fine tune the ride height.

Did anyone see the new AIRBAG system ride height control? Cost around $1300, they say it drops the car 2" itself and you can drop it another 4"'s and raise it more. THAT WOULD BE SOME KILLER RIDE!

yellow dont worry about it add a synthetic oil to your tranny.

Amsoil makes a great universal ATF. Tranny shops love it because they dont have to stock several for Ford, several for Chevy, honda, Dodge, etc. It is good for all models except a rare few.

Check out this link for more info on synthetic tranny fluid.

http://www.amsoil.com/products/atf.html

start lowering the temps of your tranny and extend the life.

a manual transmission generally feels faster than an automatic.
