Default EEC IV to EEC V Swap

I am a new member to this site.

I am in the beginning stages of restoring a non running 1986 GT.

Does anyone out there have any information \ tips on swapping out the factory EEC-IV (Speed Density) to an EEC-V on a GT?

I would like to go with the EEC-V for the ease of tunability (Flash Tuning vs. J3 Port) in addition I would gain the Mass Air set up which I'll need.

The car currently has a T-5 so this may be an issue.

Thanks
Chris

Welcome to AFM!

You do know that you don't have to convert to an EEC V to have MAF. There are plenty of mass air EEC IV cars.

I'm not even sure that it's possible to convert to EEC V....
There are good tuning systems for EEC IVs, systems such as twEECer and the Quarterhorse.

Your t-5 will work fine. 86-89 had the same t-5. 86-93 will all interchange for the 5.0 but 90 thru 93 have a torque rating of 300lb and the 86 thru 89 are rated at 265.

Yldpony,

Thanks for the Welcome. Been browsing this site and seem to have found good answers to a few questions.

I guess I'm "Boldly Going Where No Man Has Gone Before" trying to make this conversion.

I guess I like the EEC-V due to the flash tuning and No chip on the J-3 port of the EEC.

I rebuilt my 98 Explorer (5.0L) last year which has EEC-V and tuning was a breeze with my laptop. Did Cam, Heads, factory GT-40P, roller rockers etc during the rebuild. It woke that engine up.

I know the same can be done with the Tweecer and the
EEC-IV but you have the extra chip to deal with.

Do you guys know of any Mustangs which had a 5.0L, manual transmission with the EEC-V controls which I could use as base parts?

Thanks
Chris

Dreger,

Thanks for the data.

The car was not originally a T-5, it was AOD. The AOD died in 2000 with a loud bang. It had locked itself into a solid shaft!

I've never seen so many Aluminum "French Fries" come out of a transmission pan!

I did the T-5 swap and dorve the car about 4 days till a guy got sideways out of a U Turn and I T-Boned him!

Major damage to my front end. The car has been idle since waiting for me.

At the time of the T-5 swap I did not pay attention to if it was a WC or Non WC transmission. It's coming out anyway during the resto for a possible rebuild. I'll figure out something.

I'm just plotting the mission now doing research on options.

Wish me luck!

Thanks
Chris

Unfortunately....... no passenger car was fitted with a 5.0L and OBD-II, they were exclusive to trucks/vans and SUV's....... which can serve as donor alternatives for your project.

Thanks Joel5.0,

That will help limit search parameters.

Now to find something with 5.0L, 5 speed, OBD-II.

I'll start looking at trucks. Most SUV were auto with the 5.0L

I guess it limits me even further.

Regards,
Chris

I would really start looking at things like the twEECer and Quarterhorse. They don't need any sort of a chip, you just plug and play...

The EEC V won't work on a pushrod 5.0 anyway.

IF you are into EEC tuning/programming....... the transmission type used (non-electronic auto transmission used) is a matter of setting the correct trans-type logic switch in the logic.

I just got through with my 98 Explorer last year.

5.0L 302 w 4R70 Transmission. EEC-V.

I was getting 11MPG before SCT Tune. Now getting 16.5-17MPG on the highway @ 75MPH.

Dyno came back with 235 Brake HP. That was only with GT-40P heads (Polished \ valve job) and comp cam and Gibson Exhaust.

I'm not racing Mustangs with it but it is one fast little SUV.

I'll do the research and let ya'll know what I can come up with.
