Default 4 to 8 and Chassis

I've been reading here allot about 4 cyl to 8 cyl swaps.

There is a misconception that the chassis are different between the two. They are not. You will not twist a 4cyl chassis any more then an 8. Both need to be stiffened-up. The major differences come from springs, brakes, fuel system and drive train.

One thing to point out, The 4cyl chassis will be in much better shape then the V8. (unless someone just trashed the h@#$ out of it) The four banger did not have the power to twist the chassis or tear apart torque boxes. This makes the 4 banger an excellent choice for a project car.

I have done a couple of these swaps it is not hard just time consuming. And I believe we are trying to come up with a project for this site. So stay tuned.

I've done it in the past and I really think it's the way to go. Most of us end up changing everything out anyway, so why not start out with a cheaper, lesser abused chassis?

Default 4 Cyl Mustang Conversions

Yes, you are right on!!

4 banger mustangs are some of the best cars being redone right now.

The most important factor is, they haven't been thrashed. Plus, they are available cheap and seem to be really clean.

they are a bit more work to build then V8 car already, but they are worth it in the end result.

i did one awhile back never did figure out how to get the fuel pump to work without wiring it direct, so whenever the key was on it was on. fun project. my and a friend are in the process of building a motor now, trying to find the right 4 banger to put it in

You guys are correct for the most part.

However, its often just cheaper/easier to start with a low mileage 5.0L than to perform the 4 to 8 conversion.

Still, cheaper/easier is not always better.

91 LX Incon Twin Turbo, eh? Sounds interesting. What are you running?

I don't know what low mileage 5.0's go for where your at, but they get a very pretty penny for them here in Calif. They go on average 5-6k and a few choice ones around 8k.

I paid $1300.00 for a very cherry 91 LX 4 banger. Turned around and paid $1500.00 for a cherry but wrecked 5.0 When all was said and done maybe $3500.00 was put out total. Know I had a very cherry 91 5.0.

I've run 12.40 @ 110mph. in 100 deg weather 1.7 60ft. Fully loaded with A/C and smog crap. Found out later I had a blown head gasket, running off battery and injectors not flowing what they should have. When she is on the road again I hope to be in the low 11's maybe 10's. We'll see!
