Default What is involved in calibrating a Mass air flow meter?

'89 car -

I bought a 77mm pro M meter calibrated for my 24# injectors as part of a package deal. The meter is way too big for my 350-375 hp combo though.

I would like to put the stock meter back on my car but stock meters (non cobra) are calibrated for 19# injectors. What exactly is involved in calibrating a MAF meter?

You need to reprogram the EEC, you need a chip.

Actually the EEC is the one that "knows" what size injectors you have, the injector size has to be changed at the EEC.

or you can always send the meter back to pro-m and have them fix it.

Forgive the ignorance here, but I love to learn new things (even if I have to do so by asking a silly question).

How is it too big? Does this present a problem? I would think based on my limited knowledge that a larger meter may not help you - but does it hurt?

Thanks in advance,

mic

I don't think it's too big, I like it a little big, it fits just right.

dude;that meter should not be too big at all, especially if your pushing the hp you claim.if the meter is calibrated for the 24lb injectors you should be fine.now what you should have to go with that meter, injectors and the 375 hp is nothing smaller than a 70mm tb.

I have 24# injectors on the car now and the Pro-M is calibrated for 24#. The car seems to lack low end power, which I am currently blaming on the oversized meter. The stock meter I remember reading somewhere is good for nearly 400HP, so I was thinking I would replace the Pro-M with the stock one (which is calibrated for 19# injectors, hence my calibration question).

The rest of my combo is a good match. That's why I was thinking of swaping the "big" maf with stock.

My TB is 70mm.

I don't think you are too big at all--you need to look elsewhere for the low-end power. Timing, rear axle gears and fuel pressure for a good start. Too much air I don't think is as big of a problem as too little fuel

A larger meter won't hurt low end at all. No connection there. What's the rest of your setup?

The stock meter is not even close to "good for" 400 hp. The stock meter is a restriction on a STOCK motor. Typical stock 5.0s pick up 5 hp just from ditching the stock meter for a larger one.

Hmmm. Guess I got a hold of some bad information regarding the MAF meter.

Combo is DSS 306, GT-40X heads (64cc), fairly aggressive comp cam (don't remember the specs.), Cobra upper and lower intake, 70MM TB, 77MM MAF, 24# injectors, unequal length headers, 3.73 gears, 5-speed. No power steering, AC, smog.
