Yeah using the old head gaskets was asking for trouble.

yep no compression not to mention all the coolant in the oil, risk of bending a rod. thats an awful lot of work to save money on head gaskets. I'm right around the corner and love to turn wrenches when the time alows. let me know.

If I showed up there She'd have me in State Penn

Reading again, did you change the gaskets with the new heads never start the engine and put the old heads back on? no pwer could be alot of things. Vacuum leak, improper valve lash, plug wires wrong etc. What year are you building?

Sounds like an awfull amount of work to go thru with heads and such to not throw on a set of new gaskets. An ounce of prevention is better then a pound of cure.

not sealing between the heads and block means air escapes when its being compressed resulting in no compression. need a good/perfect seal to keep the power up.
