Default Power Steering Went Out!

Hey guys,

My power steering has been working just fine lately. But after starting the car this afternoon to head out for some lunch, the power steering wasn't working. I let it idle for a few more minutes, and it still wouldn't work. I shut it off, checked the fluid, and the level was fine. I don't see any leaks or anything of that sort. Do power steering pumps just go out like that? With no warning? Thanks for your help.

Usually when that happens it is only in one direction, it means the spool valve inside the rack has failed. Normally it goes away when it is warms up, and gets worse the colder it is. Can you hear the pump operating, and is it hard to steer in both directions?
PS, the spool valve is not replaceable and requires replacing the rack.

Thanks for the help Jarrett. Yes, it's difficult to steer in both directions. It feels like when you have the car off and try to steer it. The wheels barely move. I'm pretty sure I don't hear the pump. I never paid much attention to it before obvisouly, so I'm not entirely sure what sound it should be making. Any other way to help diangose? Thanks!

Start it up and slowly remove the P/S pump cap. If its turning and moving fluid (watch for bubbles) than the problem is probably elsewhere.

Yeah, I did what you suggested and the fluid isn't moving at all. So I guess that means the P/S pump is dead. I'm plan on replacing it tomorrow. Anyone have any general tips or suggestions before I start? Thanks again.

Okay guys, I pulled the hoses off the pump and turned the pulley by hand. When I did that, fluid starting coming out of the pump. This leads me to believe the pump is working, but the rack is the problem? I'm just looking for second opinions. Any ideas?
