Total Mustangs produced: 128,189
Total GT’s produced: 34,435

(For more production number details, go to our Production Numbers Summary page.)

225 HP @ 4000 RPM
300 ft/lb @ 3000 RPM

With a rather significant drop-off in production and sales (the recession had hit), the Mustang GT continued into 1990 with the same basic equipment it had carried since 1987. The powerful EFI 5.0L HO engine was back once again featuring a mass airflow sensor, 60mm throttle body, tuned length aluminum intake plenum, 19 lb-hr injectors, E7TE truck heads, roller lifter cam, remote low-restriction air cleaner, and EEC-IV electronics system. Rounding out the performance goodies once again were the GT’s stainless steel exhausts teamed up with stainless steel tubular headers, 10.84-inch front brakes and the GT handling suspension consisting of progressive rate springs, 1.3 inch front anti-sway bar, 0.83 inch rear anti-sway bar, gas pressurized struts with rear quadra-shocks and 15x7 inch wheels with uni-directional Goodyear Gatorbacks.

External changes on the 1990 GT’s are limited to color changes only, with Deep Titanium Metallic, Light Titanium Metallic, Wild Strawberry Metallic, Twilight Blue Metallic and Ultra Blue Metallic (all of these available with the optional Titanium lower accent treatment) joining previous GT colors of Black, Oxford White, Bright Red and Cabernet Red. In addition, the external tape stripe on the GT’s beltline was discontinued for 1990. Of course, the distinguishing features of the GT remain flush-fitting headlamps, aerodynamic nose, rear wing, round fog lights, louvered taillights, flush rear quarter window, ground effects package and 15x7 inch “Turbine” wheels.

The biggest changes to the 1990 GT’s were in the cockpit and the most obvious of these was the addition of a driver's-side air bag. Unfortunately, along with the addition of the airbag came the loss of the GT’s dash mounted warning light module (with low fuel and low washer fluid lights) and the tilt steering column. Other interior modifications in 1990 included the addition of rear seat shoulder belts, new front seat headrests (smaller and non-tilting), door trim map pockets, new seat upholstery and slightly revised ventilation system controls. In addition, as Ford desperately attempted to pare weight to meet CAFE standards, the locking fuel door along with the center armrest were dropped for 1990. The armrest returned mid-year after the resulting uproar from buyers.

With the exception of the above changes, standard interior features remained the same from the prior year: 7,000 rpm tach, swiveling map light, interval wipers, articulated sports seats, center console, driver’s foot rest/ support and brake and accelerator pedals positioned to allow heel-and -toe downshifting. The only carryover interior trim color was Scarlet Red, with Titanium replacing Medium Grey and Black replacing Beige. The handsome optional leather articulated sport seats featuring white and red, white and blue, or white and grey leather (convertibles only) remained on the 1990 option list along with power locks and windows, speed control, dual remote mirrors, air conditioning, sunroof, rear defrost and electronic AM/FM stereo with cassette. New for 1990 convertibles were optional Black leather seats. In addition, Titanium only leather seats became available in the GT hatchback for the first time.

As a token commemoration of the Mustang’s 25th anniversary, Ford placed a small running horse emblem engraved with the words “25 Years” on the passenger side dash of all Mustangs manufactured from mid-April 1989 to late production 1990. This, of course, included Mustangs from both model years 1989 and 1990. Mustangs sold during this time period also had the same running horse emblem pictured in the background of the window sticker. After 1990, the running horse emblem remained on the dash without the “25 Years” engraving at the bottom.

The introduction of the new, exciting paint colors for 1990 did set the ‘90 GTs apart from previous years, but the basic car and equipment was still the same. Still, the Mustang GT continued to offer some of the best performance for the money on the American market.
