Default 302 sportsman block or 351 block??

Another age old question..... Which can handle more power.

My original goal was a sportsman block stuffed with a CHP 331 with a girdle holding it all together and afr 165 on top with a 175 wet shot.

But what if I just use a 351 block with a girdle would that be stronger? No stroking just 351 C.I. with 185 AFR and the 175.

I know the sportman block could handle it, but I know I could get ahold of a 351 block easier and cheaper. I do know though that some 351 block are stronger than others. The strong ones being the old truck blocks
(or so I've heard). That being said, I also know I would have to do a rollor conversion. I WANT SOMETHING VERY STREETABLE. So with that cost being added in ther, and the necessary 302 to 351 conversion parts too. Which would be a better buy? Which would be stronger?

Thanks for any tips. Just trying to make sure I think of everything before I start buying parts in the future...

i believe one issue may arise and that it cam's..........most 351's are solid roller cam's if i am not mistaken........if it were me, i would go with the sportsman block, slap in a girdle and go have fun............just my .02...........hotwheels

Hey If you have the money check out DSS Racing they have CNC blocks that are ready to go. They have a CNC 20 block that's about $1,000 and it can hold up to 2,000

For me personally when I did all my planning for putting my 347 together everyone I spoke to said the B50 Sportsman block is not that much of an improvement over the stock block. With the 351 you wil have to modify it most likely to accept the roller lifter unless you go with aftermarket lifters (holddown plate). I say go with the stock 302 block and invest in good rotating parts a 175 shot you will be well with in the limits of that block. The 352 block unless you find a much older block is not improvement over a stock 302 block just a taller deck height. As to the level 20 CNC blocks holding 2000 HP, unless it is a Dart or an R4 NO WAY IN HECK. Stock block is good for 500ish with the main webbing being the main issues. Go to www.turbomustangs.com to research what some guys are running high horsepower with.

I have heard that a few times..But then again I have also heard the motorsport block is alot better...so I don't know. BUt I can tell you that the CNC level 20 block can't handle 2,000. IT says right in the ad that is handles 50 horsepower over product blocks. Not racing block.

But what about a lightning 351 block? Its roller isn't it? What is isn't strength like?

I was meaning the Dart block that you can get from DSSRACING.

"Dart blocks are the STRONGEST blocks available.
Capable of making up to 2000HP. "
http://www.dssracing.com/dartblocks.html

And on the CNC 10 block says that is produces 40HP over stock block.

Dart blocks cost more than $1000 with machining. For a 2000 HP block you can probably triple that price because it is the billet steel all four bolt main caps top end block, not the lower of the Dart blocks.

I still think say the heck with it and use a stock. Not going to use nitrous all the time anyhow.

if you are going to upgrade on the block don't settle for anything else than an R or a dart, so stick with what you have for now. with that said, I also wouldn't put 165's on a 331. Go with the 185's.
