i have a 1985 mustang lx 5.0 302ci 5speed t-5. i got the car in june of last year. recently i changed the throwout bearing turns out it was the input shaft bearing. but thats not the problem recently it got an electrical bug. i went out one day started it up it ran for 5 seconds and died like somebody turned the key off. i found out i had no power to the coil so i ran brand new wires to positive side of the coil. i left the negative side alone. so when i get it to crank which i have to use a jumpstarter even though the battery is reading 12.20 volts. it will sometimes start up and it will run fine then die like it loses power. other times it will spit and backfire the whole time until i turn it off. it acts like the timing is off and i just pulled it and reset it. even though i checked tdc before and it was timed correctly. so i have no idea whats going on. also keep in mind its not a stock wiring harness the people before me wired it themselves. it has a holley electric fuel pump on a switch on the dash. also the electric fan is on a switch on the dash. sorry for the book i hope thats enough info. thanks for the help in advance
i replaced the ignition control module with one i got from the junk yard it was off of a 81 inline six carbuerated motor it was doing the same thing. so i put the old one back on and its the same. the reason i changed it was trying to find wiring problem. it has been sitting not running for about 2 months. when i reset the timing it will start up and run fine. then it just shuts off like you have turned the key off. then when i restart it it back fires and spits real bad. bad enough the neighbors called the cops! lol
ok i got some time to work on it today and i found out that when i was testing the coil for spark that when you turn the key to the run position the coil sparks constantly its slow at first then speeds up when i crank the motor over it stops. i got it to run again and it acts like its missing and the timing is out of wack. any help would be great thanks
Well I got it fixed. It was the red an white wires on icm they had a short in them mustang purrs like a kitten again. Now just gotta get the input shaft bearing changed. Does anyone know how to do that? Also will it cause damage to the tranny if I drive it with the bearing bad? It's a t5 5 speed
