Default ALTERNATOR

I HAVE AN 85 GT 5SPD WITH A 6 GROOVE BELT. WENT TO PURCHASE AN ALTERNATOR AND WAS TOLD THAT WAS NOT USED ON MY 85 GT. CAN SOMEONE VARIFY THIS? ALSO WHAT AMPERAGE WAS USED.

Default alternator

What exactly were you told? The '85 GT has a serpentine belt, but I think it is 5 groove. I will check mine tomorrow and let you know.

Default ALTERNATOR ?

I WENT TO NAPA WITH MY ALTERNATOR IN HAND AND THEY KEPT SHOWING ME ALTERNATORS WITH A SINGLE OR DBL V BELT TYPE PULLY'S.

Default They are way off on this one!

I know for sure the 86' came with a serpetine belt, but I am pretty sure the 85' did also.

So if they are showing you alt's with a V-belt, go to a different parts store, because they are going to not only give you the wrong pulley, they are going to give a lower output alt. as well. I believe the V belt design in previous years was only 75amp and later years it was 90amp. Go for a 94+ year model and you will get a 130amp. That was factory for that year. Double check the mounting and size.

THANKS FOR THE INPUT . I THINK I WILL JUST HAVE IT REBUILT AND BE DONE WITH IT. THE ALTERNATOR WORKS IT SOUNDS LIKE THE BEARING OR GOING OUT.

I HAVE A 90 STANG AUTO. WITH A SHIFT KIT I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW WHICH IS THE BEST WAY TO SHIFT WHEN RACING
