I am the proud new owner of an '85 5.0L, 5 speed hatch. The car has many performance mods on it already, and I plan to do some more, since this will be a street/strip car, and not my daily driver. I would like some input on a problem with the speedo, which does not work. The guy I got it from says that the drive gear in the
tranny has slid back on the shaft and that's why it doesn't work. I pulled the cable out, and the driven gear is on the end of the cable, but, sure enough I see no gear when I look in the hole in the
trans, and can't feel any when I stick my finger in. As I understand it this gear is held in place by a snap ring on the output shaft, so I guess it could move back if the ring is broken. I have downloaded the T5 manual which shows all the exploded drawings, and gives disassembly, and reassembly instructions, so I should be good to go at fixing this, but it sure would be nice to hear from someone who has gone through the same thing, as there are usually some things to watch out for that are not listed in the manuals.
So any of you who have any little bits of wisdom on this repair please respond, as I need to fix the speedo in order to get the car inspected.
One other question about the speedo. This car has an 85 mph speedo in it, which doesn't really matter, since I won't drive it faster than that on the street, and I sure won't be looking at the speedo at the strip, but I do wonder if running the car faster than 85 is what caused this problem in the first place. Will running 100 or so cause problems with this speedo?
Thanks for any help you can provide.
