Do you read the timing pointer at the end or in the circle?
I have a 90 mustang 5.0 ho;
I haven't checked the timing since I got the car, but I figured, the car was all stock so must be the timing.
Today I decided to check it, I painted the number 10 and 20 and all the bars between to be able to read it correctly, removed the little spout thingie, connected the timing light to the #1 spark plug (does it matter if it's connected to the distributor? didn't seem to change a thing).
So I started it up, started the timing light and looked. Now I didn't know if I was supposed to read the timing at the sharp edge of the little bracket or in the hole. If I look at the sharp edge, it points right on the 20, and if I look it the hole I can barely discern a 0.
I always run the car on 89 octane and it doesn't ping, so I figure there is no way the timing is 20. And if I look in the hole of the bracket I can't see any number (if it was between 10 and 20 I should see it since I painted it...).
So any idea what's the deal? did I do something wrong? any help would be appreciated
I'll try to make a video tonight, there is no way the timing is really 20. Is there any way something moved, or some other problem that would show the wrong timing?
I'm really puzzled
ahah, I was waiting for this one I'll get one as soon as I remove my air pump
And well if it interests anyone, it would seem my timing light actually showed the double of the real timing. At 30 it pings when I rev the 2nd gear from 1000rpm wich is something you would expect from 15 (I believe so) so I set it to about 26 (13) Until I get a new timing light and try 91 or 94 octane instead of 89
