Default fuel tank issues

i have an 88 mustang conv. 5.0 of course. ne how i dropped the fuel tank out to replace the fuel sending unit and noticed that the old one had been torn to pieces by a piece of metal rolling around inside. it is i guess something to keep the gas in the pick up while going around turns. my question is, does the fuel pump and pick up slide down into that to keep it from rolling around the tank and destryoing the sending unit???????? any help would be most excellent.

thx Ben

Is it like a tank baffle seperated from the tank ? I would try to fish it our or replace the tank. That does not sound healthy for your pump or sending unit. www.50resto.com sells replacement tanks for about $140. Not too bad if you ask me.

it was the baffle that was rattling around, but their was not a real problem. the fuel pump just slides into it. the bigger issue was trying to get a fuel sending unit for the tank. ha, had to get it from a ford racing dealership which was surprisngly cheap. any ways those of you looking to change it out make sure that baffle is not rolling around or it will cost you about 100.00 bucks to replace that sending unit.

make sure you change that little-bitty hose that connects the pump to the lines--mine was cracked and drove me nuts till I found it

no need to replace the tank, the tank is in wonderful condition. just someone did not replace the fuel pump right. but i did replace the fuel pump and the sending unit since i had it out. might as well cause less problems later on

mttakamine, i would say that your rubber filler neck grommet went bad. mine did that as well. i went to ford and got a replacement for 11 bucks. it doesnt require dropping your tank, but it does require 2 guys and about 2 hours of your time. and also MAKE SURE that the area around the tank and behind the fuel door is clean as a whistle. you dont want any excess dirt getting into that tank!

Sounds like that grommet to me. Won't really know until you get under there though.
