Default My new 5.0 just dies on me in rain

Hey guys whats up.I have a 95 5.0 Stang that is having some problems

I have a big problem with it.When ever its raining real hard the car stalls. It dies no matter where I am at and wont crank for ever.It turns over when I try to crank it but it just acts like its out of gas.I do also have a Cirvinas Ram air hood.I first thought that it was getting wet through the air vents.I changed the coil pack because it had alot of water inside it.So thats brand new and then I put a cover over it to stop it from getting wet.I have no clue why the car is acting like this.It sucks real bad cause I was out in sunny weather and it started to pour and there I was me and my girlfriend for an hour stuck. After a while it will start. It done this once in dry weather but it does this almost everytime in rain.I do know that Deloris my unlces wife let it run out of gas(Person I bought it off of.) all the time. She has a bad habit of that and maybe its the fuel pump.I just dont know why it would only do that in the rain.I took it to a shop and all the computer read was that it had a bad oxogen sensor.Other then that we are baffeled.Anyways guys I would love some info. Thanks

I had the same problem last year. Rained one week, car wouldn't start. Changed distributor. Was fine until it rained again the following week, wouldn't start again. Full blown tuneup, that solved my problem.

does your car have an aftermaket ignition control like a msd or accel mounted under the hood? If so its possible its getting wet internally and not letting the car start. I had that problem with one of mine.

No actually everything is basically stock except for whats in my sig.I have put a new starter on it so I know its not the starter.Had that problem before too.But now it just turns over and wont do anything. After awhile it will start but then die as soon as its started.Seems like it dries up.I just cant imagine what can be getting wet and how to find out.

you probably have a crack in your distributer cap change that and see if it helps. if it does have a crack moisture gets in and it wont start till it dries out

mine did that when i hit a big puddle and hydroed, lol i was doing like 60 on a 40 road, and i hit a big puddle, and i spun around 2.5 times in the middle of the road, 4 lane road, and i came toi stop where the meridian would be if there was one, front tires on the invisable meridian and back tires in the oncoming traffic lane blocking about 3/4 of the left lane, i sat there and it would not fire, i cranked it for about 10 seconds nothing, let it sit for like 30 seconds and tried again, gave a small kick and then another and another and it fired up, don't know what it was...

full tune up, plugs, wires, cap, rotor, air filter, pcv valve, and fuel system cleaning and oil change, i do not know what the prices are down where u people live but i will list the prices here, keep in mind they are in canadian $
plugs, list price, 4.19$ each my price, 2.00$
wires, list price, 68.35$ my price, 40.00$ for bosch 8.5mm
cap 15$ for msd (25 for ford motorsports+3 week delivery)
rotor 5$ for msd (8 for ford motor...)
air filter, $15ish
pcv... 7.50$
full fuel system cleaning... depends on the place, the one i used to sell, 99.99$
oil change, 38.98

all prices are before taxes

so for the basic stuff, my price... 98.50+tax, list prices, 144.37+taxes,
btwm u guys are lucky with taxes, 1% federal... sht we pay 7% fed 7% provincial (state) so 14% total tax

I was going to say the distributor cap, ensure its water tight, and you've got the coil issue covered, I see you have a k&n, fenderwell kit? or ram air?

Buddy of mine used to suck up a bunch of water when it was raining out, and it stalled his motor, water all in the intake etc.

Its worth checking out.

k&n makes a kit to prevent any water from getting in the intake, u might want to take a look @ that

Yea its just a K&N airfilter. The silencer is taken off and the platic cover that covers the filter is cut off.It basically just is setting out.I do have the ram air hood so maybe water is getting the filter wet.Is that enough to make the engine die though. And not fire back up

A little bit of water probably would just make it stutter a bit, but I really don't know how much water your getting in there. Only way to know is start the car, and turn the hose on it on a shower setting, and see what happens, and see if your filter is all soggy.

Did you ever change your plugwires? If you've changed them or even taken them off and not put the dielectric grease back on, you might be getting some water in or on the ends and it is grounding out. Sounds like it would be either that or the distributor cap. Get a new cap and go through all the wires on both sides including the coil/distributor wire putting dielectric grease on all of them. Try that and see if the problem persists. Keep us informed because this is an interesting problem.

you would need a whole lot of water in your intake for it to stall out, my car when it hydroed and stalled out, i checked my air filter like 5 minutes later and it was dry as a bone, so i da no... i know i had a shop pull a vacuume line off of my engine and stick it in a cup of water to suck water in and wake up the cats, and it barely even stuttered

good idea! i assume now that that was what happened with mine, if your plug leads have cracks or anything in them, they will ground to the block or frame, and that will cause no spark when they get wet, do u have the stock distributer condom on it? if not u might want to throw it on for now...
