Default Rear tranny seal

My 84 has a leaky rear transmission seal, its dripping on the x-pipe. Question is, do I have to drop the exauhst or can I Just pull the driveshaft out from the rear end. Also is there anything special about removing and replacing the seal, I already have the new one but I dont know if it has to be pressed in or if it just sits in place. The haynes manual doesnt say anything about it.

don't quote me on it, but i think it is the same as a front seal just pull the drive shaft and use a flathead screwdriver to pull the seal out, then push the new one back in place, u might want to feel for wear on your drive shaft before putting the new seal in, if there is wear on the area the seal goes, then u should either get an oversized seal, or a sleeve to put over the spline shaft to compensate for that wear and build it up to create a good seal...
