Default Ignition Timing Question

I have a '91 GT that is pretty much stock for now except for headers and 2.5" exaust. So far at the races my best ET has been in the low 15's (it's a work in progress) I heard from some fellow 5.0 racers at the local drag strip that a stock 5.0 can do much better if the timing is adjusted. But i can't remeber what they said to set it at. Also, I heard that the timing cannot be adjusted without the computer resetting it after the little plug is plugged back in. Does anybody know what I am talking about. Thanks.

Yes advancing timing helps.

Advance to 14°.

To do so, read this:

Hi,

I was told by an engine builder that you want about 35 degrees of total advance. Total being the initial plus all mechanical and vacuum advance. To check this you will need an advancing timing light and you will need to rev the motor till all advance is in If you have a vacuum advance you can adjust that also.

Timing a supercharged engine is different. It depends on how much boost and other mods you have.

It would be the same way with the MSD.

A good rule of thumb is a degree of timing for 2 psi of boost. Most supercharger manufacturers base their kits off of the stock 10 degree setting. Example would be start at 10 and add 10 psi of boost, meaning you'd want to take out 5 degrees of timing. You could get an MSD BTM and set the number of degrees to take out and it'll do it for you.
