Default Valve spring replacement

Hello,

Has anyone here changed valve springs without removing the head from the engine? I tried to remove the valve springs today with no avail. First I started with a handy little tool that grasps the bottom of the spring and compresses the spring. Great tool if you are running a single spring, I'm running dual springs with a dampner. The problem I'm having is if I'm lucky enough to actually get a hold of the inner spring, the jaws on this tool aren't long enough and the inner spring slips off and I'm left with just the outer spring compressed. Then I went and bought another type of spring compressor that is basically just a piece stee that you bolt on to your rocker stud and use the stud as a fulcrum and compress the spring that way. Even with 120lbs of air pressue, I can't get the valve to stay closed as I compress the spring.

Am I missing something here?

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Scott

Your problem is that the valve locks are wedged into the valve spring retainer. You need to give them a little wack on the edge of the retainer with a soft faced hammer like a plastic dead blow one to break them loose. Do it with the air in the cylinder. Keep a little magnet handy to fish the locks out once you have the spring compressed.

Thanks for the info Tbird, that's what I was just thinking to myself.

P.S. Sounds like you have a pretty nice ride there.
