Default Missing Trans Speddo Gear

I have five speed trans 3.73 gears and pulled out a chewed up 23 white speedo gear. I looked into the hole where senor goes in and saw what looked like another gear in tranny that is perpindicular to the 23. Does that mean its broken? That doesn't make any sense would the 23 gear act as Male and the tranny gear Female, or does the 23 and tranny gear work at a 90 degree angle. Bet not, surely have to remove the tail and replace the gear inside.

Secondly, when Ford changed mine to 23 the factory gear inside stayed. Which means my speedo is calli. for 3.55's?.. Since installation I've learned that 90 to 93 manuals should not be above 3.55's. Factory, is the inside gear 8, 7, or 6 tooth? Curious if infact i do have to go the 7/21 combo route?

are you running a T5 trans? if so then thats what you need to do. i was running the 21 tooth red gear with the stock inside gear for a while and my speedo still seemed fast, so i found out that you need to change the inside (drive gear) as well. you need the yellow 7 tooth drive gear and the red 21 tooth driven speedo gear to be as closely calibrated as possible, if you are running a stock size wheel and tire combo. good news is that you can get both of these parts through the ford dealer. i will post the part numbers if i can find them later.
oh yea the stock inside drive gear is the green 8 tooth.

Thanks for info. Yes it's a T5. Thought mine was a little fast with the white 23. A little dissapointed that i have to drop the tail to change broken gear but, thats what i love about my Stang is it keeps me busy!..
