Yes, you can change the gears yourself. When you pull the differential from the housing there will be spacers (shims) on both sides. These are put in at the factory to properly set the backlash. In most cases you can just put back the spacers exactly like they came out and the backlash will be acceptable. Make sure you have some Ford friction modifier to put back into the rearend along with the rear end lube. Not having this in there will lead to premature posi-traction unit failure. Are you going with 3.73's? They're a good compromise between the 4.10's that a strong N/A motor needs and the 3.55's that a strong turbo motor needs. If you go with 4.10's get ready to pull the shifter in a hurry as first gear lasts like half a second. Try to find someone to help you that's changed some gears before as there are a lot more steps that are easy to show but difficult to explain in print. The axles have to be pulled out slightly after removing the c-clips, you need to check the bearing wear pattern on the axles while out, and a couple of other things like that. I know at least one person around here that will change them for 40 bucks that knows what he is doing. If you can find someone in your area for that price, it will be the best money you will ever spend. Good luck.

Is there any where that I can find info on how to do this, I have never worked on cars before and would like to learn. Do you know of any sites that list a step by step list or something of that sort?

There are repair manuals like Chiltons that will give you step by step instructions on how to work on the car. I'm sure there are sites online that will do likewise. However, none of these can come close to having someone that knows how work with you on projects like this. I learned from someone that had seemingly unlimited knowledge working on cars 20 years ago and though he didn't teach me everything, he did give the the confidence to try most anything. The best advice I can give you when you start working on your car yourself is make sure that the car you are working on isn't your only mode of transportation. If it's your only car, no matter how good you are, Mr. Murphy has a way of making things go wrong and putting you to walking. Never forget this.

I would make sure you feel real comfortable with the proceedure of installing gears before doing it. It is almost like an art form. It must be shimmed properly or the gears will whine and wear. I am a mechanic and have learned by doing things myself. I can do almost anything on a mustang, but there are two things I leave to the pro's, rearend gear setup and transmission rebuilding. Everything else, I would highly recommend you learn by doing. Have fun! It's a blast once you get into working on your car!

Installing rearend gears is not something I would recommend for the first time do-it-yourselfer. I like to do many of my own installs but I leave gear installs and transmission rebuilds for professionals. There are plenty of mustangers that do it themselves, especially gear installs but Glen is absolutely right. If you don't know what you are doing, there is a very good chance you will have problems. Unless you are experienced or up for a challenge, consider leaving it to a professional.
