Am I Supposed to Drain Both Drain Plugs to Do an Oil Change?
Hi Everybody,
As soon as I bought my Mustang about a month ago, I went out and bought some synthetic oil and drained the oil that was in it. Well, I saw two drain plugs but just opened the rear one and drained the oil. I then added 5 quarts of Valvoline synthetic and started it up and let it idle for about two minutes. I then shut it off and checked the level and it seemed like it was a quart or a little more than a quart over the cross hatches on the dip stick. I just left it in there and drove around for three weeks, until last week, and checked the level. It was still at the same place. So today I went and bought some Lucas oil stabilizer and drained about two quarts from my oil pan, this time the rear one I drained about a quart and then the front plug I drained another quart. The dipstick was in the add one quart region so I added the whole bottle of Lucas. Then the level was about a quarter inch above the full mark, so I just left it in. Is this okay or should I drain a little bit out? Why the two drain plugs and do we drain both plugs at oil changes? Thanks for your help.

its a dual sump pan for the position of the crossmember..
....k-member.....not crossmember, the crossmember supports the tranny.

I pull both the plugs and then pour a quart of some cheap oil through the motor to kind of flush it out. After that pull your filter and put the new one on. Add 5 quarts of the good stuff and be done.
