Is it possible to switch the rocker arms on a 88 5.0 HO to a 1.7 ratio without having to do any serios work to the heads. If so what style would be best and what brand? what other mods would you need for such an adventure?

Yes, 1.7 roller rockers are bolt-on replacements with no head work required. They add lift and make a nice improvement.

Get a set from Crane or Ford Motorsports. They have direct replacements for post type rockers. Stud type are GM style and require guide plates and rocker studs.
