Hi I have a 1983 mustang with a 2.3 4cyl and a 4spd and I am getting ready to swap it out with a 1979 mercury cougar 351 w and a c4 auto already have a v8 rearend 3.55 gears and posi my questions are what do I need to do about the speedo cable for a 4spd to a c4 and what do I need for a trasmission crossmember dO I build one costumise one so on never done this before I do have the motor mounts heaers and oilpan and I am goign to up grade my suspension and I am goign to run with the braked up front for noe the back are all new just the thing is the front are already new so I will upgrade them when they are gone if you have any other sugestions I am open to them mostly just trying to find out about crossmember and speedometer cable thanks .........smitty :thumbsup
The original speedo cable will be fine. As far as the crossmember, you're going to need a double hump unit to clear the dual exhaust. I would suggest the FRPP unit, as it comes wiyth the tubes un-welded so you can slide it around to get it where you neeed it.
If you get a used one (From an '86-'93 v8), you will have to gind the welds on the tubes off so you can adjust it.
ok thanks but my exhaust will not be factory I am goign to run it out different I suposse my question being is will my c4 trans hook up to the orginal crossmember as in trans mount nd what not if so great if not what needs to be done about making the trans bolt to it thanks .
How you runnin' the exhaust? If it's duals, and they run under the x-member ( They have too, there's no room for anything else!), you're going to need the later double hump.
the exhaust will not have cats and will come from long tube swap headers and in to thrush turbo mufflers and and will turn before the crossmember and exit in front of the rear tires or just dump under the car by missouri laws they can dump under the car and do not have ot have cats .
The collector on the LT's ends up a 1/2 foot from the x member.... If you plan on connecting anything to those headers, you're going to need the double hump x member... The design is to clear the actuall exhaust pipe, not the cat's.
oh ok I see what you are saying now for installing the cross member is it a weld on thing or bolt on what is all involved in this crossmember swap and this will work on the 4spd to c4 conversion? thanks.:thumbsup
You'll need a dual sump oil pan for the 351. The 302 ones won't work, but the 351 pans are readily available.
Your speedo cable will work, but you'll need a new gear with the 3:55s.

Ford Motorsport or FRPP. Or check anyplace which sells speed parts for these cars. Summit or Jeg's might even have them.
